I'd argue there is always merit in starting in the extremes and seeing how far one must deviate to reach compromise and ultimately a solution. It's refusing to budge from the extreme that's dangerous.

The mention of anarchy and totalitarianism describes my household and its extremes perfectly. I'm the household anarchist. My Wife is the domestic totalitarian. My daughters are a bizarre blend as a result. They fart at the dinner table and then act sincerely bothered and thoroughly annoyed by it.
