HS Recruiting News

Considering we are one semester into his 8 of eligibility I’m thrilled we grabbed him. Seems a little early to put this on him. Both of us could be wrong, but let’s see how spring plays out.
I’m not in disagreement but if ‘25-‘26 is the window then we need to make sure we’ve done everything possible to shore up by them. I don’t think you wait on him too long if you don’t see a big jump in the spring. He needs to show AA potential (like volk) at the least and if he’s not then hit the portal again. Im sure yall will disagree but we really need to pull out all the stops for 35

I’m not saying I wouldn’t want a hammer at 125 if we can grab one. But throwing the towel on Spratley after not even two months and wanting studs is separate for me is all.

I guess the small question I have is… why aren’t we addressing the 165 issue? At least long term. Do none of our recruits project to 165? If not, I guess I don’t get why we didn’t give Sommer a shot
Part of the problem is time invested in a certain family that would have filled 3 weight classes, including 165. There was an opportunity cost associated with that decision that they are just now overcoming. They got Olejnik, and we should see more portal adds of a similar nature while the roster is reshaped. There are guys on the roster that could be long term answers depending on how they develop and their ability to grow or cut.

2024-2025 125 Spratley soph. 133 Hughes Fr. 141 Jamison soph. 149 Williams soph. 157 Travis jun. 165 Portal again. 174 Thompson soph. 184 Plott sen. 197 Surber sen. Hwt Carroll. Yes it needs to be Carroll or we have had a real recruiting miss by our staff. This is a potential trophy team especially with good development. This year if we get in the top 10 we are doing fairly good if we finish in the top 6 we will have had an excellent year. I really hope to see improvement with Carroll in the 2nd semester.
Nice take
Hughes looks pretty big to hold 133 very long
blair, any insights into Hughes’ weight?

Agree he will start hitting the weights and get bigger. Plus he hasn't been a kid who's cut much weight coming up . I could see him being a tweener as a freshman but if he's gonna be a 165 you just go 165
You think Teague can fill 157 for a career? Or still too early.

I do think he can for sure. He can wrestle in all positions. Putting on size won't be an issue the weight training program is top notch. And he's a worker so putting on size will happen no problem. They will obviously look for someone but wouldn't shock me if Teague is the guy

Well it will always be a part of it and this will happen next year
I agree with Blair that the portal will always play a huge part of making up the roster from here on out. As much as we may not like guys moving from one team to another it's here to stay and we need to be aggressive in the portal or we'll continue lag behind the rest of the top teams.

We have had issues with either identifying guys who have the mental strength, character and dedication to be a high end D1 wrestler or we have failed to provide the culture and atmosphere needed to help them get there.

There is a long list of these guys over the past 5 or 6 years and it has really hurt our program.

I’m very hopeful that has changed.

The best guy against the field not head to head, guy with more upside and offense… Doucet needs to aa or get close this year.

Based on results it is hard to say that he will. Stranger things have happened though.
He was a bad pickup. Hope you didn’t spend any money on him.

He wasn’t magically going to be capable at 141. He’s a 149 and should have always competed for that spot (last 2 1/2 years anyways)

Spent 3 years at 133. Not sure how 141 would’ve been magical. Also, was a low risk high reward pick up if it worked out. He was ranked top 8 at one point in 2 seasons.

I do agree that I hope we didn’t spend much but I doubt we did.

Maybe controversial, so don’t rip my head off: we focus on every weight, which is a better dual team, but national championships is what brings home the bacon. Maybe we should focus on being a team tournament team. That is one area we can draw on Penn State’s formula for success. (I hate referencing PSU for anything)
