I chose not to go to Philly this year and missed for the first time in many years. I almost regret not going due to Dean and Wyatt but my new neighbor was most probably awoken by the incomprehensible shouts coming from my abode. I woke up my neighborhood but Wyatt woke up the entire wrestling world by his takedown of one who was thought to be invincible.I think he got a Field promotion from Trump last night. I believe he is now Brevet Lieutenant General Wyatt Hendrickson, US Air Force.
Not exactly accurate. This is a sport where everyone’s got a chance — you’ve just got to believe,” said Oklahoma State coach David Taylor, who picked up a transfer commitment from Hendrickson 12 days after he was hired to lead the Cowboys. “It’s easy to get caught up in what you can and what you can’t do. Honestly, not one time this year did we talk about wrestling Gable. From the moment he got (to Oklahoma State), it was just (about becoming) a better wrestler."
I read that the last sermon Wyatt heard was about David vs Goliath. So it goes without saying that this may have been on his mind.
Owings was good, but that was the peak of his career- he was a sophomore at the time and he did not win the next two years at NCAA and I don’t believe accomplish anything on the world stage in terms of medals. It was an incredible match and a cap on an incredible season for Wyatt.
Everyone keeps talking about what huuuuge upset it was and comparing it to the Owings/
Gable upset in the early 70's. Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't Owings much more of an underdog? Did he have the type of year Wyatt has had prior to his win in the NCAA"s?
I'm not so much in the camp of huge upset. Gable certainly deserved of all his praise and number one seeding. He has trounced his competition all year and he is who he is. no disrespect............but he hadn't faced THIS Wyatt. THIS Wyatt is a different animal than he has faced previously!!!
Underdog sure
2 vs 1 sure
But Wyatt wasn't scared........Wyatt didn't know he was supposed to lose. Maybe I just wasn't as surprised as some to see him slay the giant. But maybe I just had my Orange colored glasses on!!
Can you name another finals underdog that was a bigger underdog?Owings was good, but that was the peak of his career- he was a sophomore at the time and he did not win the next two years at NCAA and I don’t believe accomplish anything on the world stage in terms of medals.
Dan Gabel was an elite college wrestler at the time and had not lost since junior high whereas Gabel Steveson lost his freshman year.
Go back and listen to the quotes when he came out of red shirt and his goal was to be an undefeated full-time national champion. That didn’t happen his first year nor his last year. With NIL he was paid a lot to come back, so no idea if he regrets his decision, but this was a remarkable upset.
Great publicity for the sport . As good as Wyatt has been, he was likely the biggest underdog in finals this year and likely some time given what Gable has accomplished.
Don't forget Steveson actually defeated Slavikouski by a DQ on stalls not medical. I would imagine that that has happened before at the NCAA but I don't remember it.Steveson didn't RS his freshman year. So he lost to one person in his first year out of high school. Cael Sanderson also lost in his first year out of high school, but he was RSing and wrestling unattached so it doesn't get counted officially.
Dan Gable did RS his freshman year (because everyone did) so he was in his third consecutive undefeated season when he got upset. Gable Steveson was in his fourth consecutive undefeated season this year ('20, '21, '22, '25). He won the Olympic Gold medal. The best heavyweight in the world.
He came back and looked better than he ever has in college. Highest career bonus percentage this year. Just throwing everyone around like they're children. He destroyed the undefeated returning champ like he was nothing. He teched the giant Cohlton Schultz in this tourney when no one had ever done that to him, in fact Schultz had only ever been majored once. He did not give up a single takedown all year.
He was unbeatable.
Wyatt pulled off the greatest upset victory I've ever witnessed.
