As I sit in my driveway giving out candy, it’s nice to see all the kids enjoying something I enjoyed so many years ago. Maybe just maybe there is hope for us if we can hang on to the simple things that make this country so great.

My trick-or-treat days were the mid 70s. Some of my favorites: Charms Blow Pops, Wacky Wafers, the rectangular bubble gum that had cartoons on the inside of the wrappers (Bazooka?), Sweet Tarts, and Jolly Ranchers. Was always disappointed getting the candy from the Brach’s bins that were in every grocery store. But now I’d kill for some of those cinnamon discs and the oval shaped hard candies that were similar to Life Savers. Can’t believe that the vanilla taffy candy in the orange and black wrappers is still being sold. I don’t know anyone who liked those. It was like Halloween fruit cake.
The one German word I was sure I could never forget? Visit. Besuch (pronounced bazook) like the army weapon bazooka.
I directed my daughter-in-law who is fluent in German: Sagen Sie vist auf Deutch. Say visit in German. I couldn't remember how to say visit in German. Daughter-in-law responded, Besuch. All nouns in German are large cap.
My wife is a teacher in our town of 12,000 and has been for 20 years. We sit out on the front patio from 6-8 and she knows 80% of the kids ho walk up. I’m there for conversation between the 200-300 kids we give candy to. Even though some of the kids that come up are not good in class, she enjoys seeing the fun they are enjoying because a lot of them have difficulties at home.
