As I sit in my driveway giving out candy, it’s nice to see all the kids enjoying something I enjoyed so many years ago. Maybe just maybe there is hope for us if we can hang on to the simple things that make this country so great.
The one German word I was sure I could never forget? Visit. Besuch (pronounced bazook) like the army weapon bazooka. My trick-or-treat days were the mid 70s. Some of my favorites: Charms Blow Pops, Wacky Wafers, the rectangular bubble gum that had cartoons on the inside of the wrappers (Bazooka?), Sweet Tarts, and Jolly Ranchers. Was always disappointed getting the candy from the Brach’s bins that were in every grocery store. But now I’d kill for some of those cinnamon discs and the oval shaped hard candies that were similar to Life Savers. Can’t believe that the vanilla taffy candy in the orange and black wrappers is still being sold. I don’t know anyone who liked those. It was like Halloween fruit cake.
