My son was invited to play on a baseball team that will play in Cooperstown, NY next August.

We plan on flying into New York City and spending a few days before heading up to Cooperstown.

Any recommendations?

The Rangers are playing the Mets so we will probably stay around near that area.

Places to eat?

Planning on using taxis or whatever to get around so any recommendations/tips are welcomed.

If you're spending time in Flushing for the Mets, then you should take the 7 train one more stop to downtown Flushing for Chinese or Korean. X'ian Famous is a fair representation of downtown Flushing (on Main Street in the mall). Nan Xiang on Main St north of Roosevelt is great Shanghainese (soupy dumplings! I think they do dim sum, too). Haven't been to any of the Korean places, but there's about a thousand. Even if you're not hungry, you should walk around downtown Flushing just for the people watching.

Shake Shack in Madison Square Park is the best burger in the world.

Morandi in the West Village is a nice Italian restaurant with a large outdoor area which is great for a family dinner.

There is also Shake Shack in center field of Citi Field. Citi Field is also by far the best stadium in NYC. Better building, food and location.

Catch a Broadway show. Might be a bit costly, but something you should do while you have the chance. I strongly suggest The Book of Mormon (unless your kids are younger than 16).

You might also consider flying into Boston, that's pretty equidistant to Cooperstown. And obviously has a lot to offer with all the historical stuff there. Flights were cheaper when I did this trip last summer. You can't go wrong with either city, although Boston is a little easier in every way.

Cooperstown is all kinds of spectacular, enjoy!

Trinity Church next to Wall Street is pretty cool. You have to get a pastrami sandwich at Katz. I would also recommend getting a pepperoni pizza at Lombardi's (first pizza place in US).

OSU bar (called Stillwater) if you wanna watch an OSU game.... If you're a foody, go to one of the momofuku / milk bar restaurants, they've popped up everywhere and are insanely good and I walked right in a couple weeks ago. The usual landmark delis. I second the Katz' nomination. I think there's a Shake Shack in Grand Central now, too. Natural History Museum is really good w the kids.

Just walking around and seeing the unexpected is my favorite part.

If its your first time do all the tourist things. Empire State, Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Wall Street, World Trade Center Memorial, Museums, Central Park etc. Go to little Italy and just pick a hole in the wall joint. Yankee Stadium has a lot less appeal to me then the original had. I haven't been there. Did go to Citi Field. Nice but if you only have a day or two I wouldn't waste one on it unless your son just wants to see a road ranger game. You can do Broadway cheaper by doing the half price ticket booth the day of the show.

Might want to stay in Manhattan instead of Queens. It's a lot easier to get to most things you will want to see. A lot of them will be within walking distance. Just wander around and take in the atmosphere of the whole thing. Subway system is fine.

Probably the only worthwhile hotels in Flushing are by LaGuardia, which is close but actually not very accessible to Citi Field, unless via Uber. Might as well stay in Midtown, where you can get the 7 from Times Sq directly to Citi. Midtown is very lame, but at least you're equidistant to the more interesting parts of the city.

Another vote for staying in Manhattan. The Doubletree at times Square is a good choice for families without going too crazy on rates.
