You are seeing some of the results of mass roster turnover and not adequately and equally replacing departed talent. Losing what we lost is not sustainable and we saw the early signs of it tonight. I do think this team can and will improve and am very thankful for the softer schedule after watching tonight.
This was the realistic concern with Bowman. There is a reason he jumped at our offer and was looking at small Texas programs. He struggled as camp wore on with accuracy and ball security and that’s why Rangel trotted out there first. The staff is very concerned with the QB position right now. We lost a QB that won a lot of games and was productive. We can chide his decision and landing spot but we missed him tonight.
The WR’s look strong and there is some promise and potential there. RBs leave a lot to be desired but hard to know how much of that is the OL that unfortunately failed their first test in giving the fans hope of improvement. This offense was just flat out bad tonight. No way to sugar coat it. Couldn’t run the football, couldn’t block anyone and very average to below average play at QB (which is a biggest concern IMO). We wore them down late which opened the run game up and enhanced our ability to throw the football which was helpful when Gundy came in. Not sure where the QB positions stands heading into next week.
Defense was a bend but not break unit today. Struggled significantly at times and not sure what to make of that unit just yet. They should get more and more comfortable though as we move through the season. The Ark team was physically and from a talent standpoint outmatched against our D but had some plenty of success moving the football. They had 2 TDs called back from penalties, a blocked FG and a botched FG. Would have been a different game perhaps with better execution from them. Bigger tests coming for them.
Special teams had a great day which is very good to see. They can win tight and tough games for you and I have an inkling we will be in a bunch of them.
