Fox News and CNN actually agree on something about school shootings

The tiny ones don't get too many clicks anymore and don't deserve major headlines. There was another school shooting today (UNC-Charlotte, 2 dead) and on the front page of both sites the shooting garnered one small headline among dozens of others about any number of topics.

For instance, this one was on CNN right under it, "A mother whose 5-year-old son died after they rode an electric scooter together has fled to Mexico, police say" and on Fox News it shared headline space with, "Florida's 'shark bite capital of the world’ sees first attack of 2019, officials say".

So, this was of course, just a minor shooting in America's rich tradition of mass/school shootings, but it begs the question: What's the body count America needs for a shooting to get front page headlines these days and generate some clicks and ad revenue? What number do we need to get our attention on the microcosm of this board and start up another thread and get an argument about guns and the second amendment and a quick sojourn with @NZ Poke about how it's actually Hollywood's fault (and maybe the Jews a little bit) and how another 18 people were killed in Chiraq in the time it took you to read this post?

Hopefully we get a comprehensive list of the prescription meds these shooters are on. But the major pharma advertisers might not go for that.

The scooter story is out of Tulsa. That mom was messed up. Having her son ride the scooter in the road near the Gathering Place. The guy that hit him fled the scene. If he had stayed with what has come to light about mom he would have only got a ticket for expired license.

How many people die from school shootings vs Chiraq annually?

Why don’t gang/drug turf shootings even make the national news? It’s weird.

I don't think that's weird. It's the same reason every person that OD's isn't on the news. Those are just sad truths. My point I'm making is that school shootings are becoming like those.

The individual deaths don’t make the national news but the epidemic of opioids absolutely does. Gang and drug turf shootings do not. I just linked a few days ago where 80% of all murders happen in 5% of American counties. (Something like that) That’s a huge story. No Geraldo, no Anderson cooper with vests and helmets walking around showing the violence. It gets squashed at the manager/production level of cable news/press. Why?

I think you answered your own question. If that statistic is true, that's the reason, right? Most people live in relatively safe, murder-free communities if 80% of murders really are in 5% of counties. But things like the opiate crisis and school shootings theoretically can affect everyone. I'm not worried about a gang member from Chicago shooting me in my front yard in OKC, but the other ones seem like real possibilities.

With that argument I should never get international news.

When and where and how frequently in Oklahoma should this be reported? Should the Ogles be talking about this? In the Daily Oklahoman?

Ogles talk about those crimes all the time. Local news is one tragedy after another. I’m talking about the big boys.

If you don't live in Chicago, it's obvious that you wouldn't fear Chicago gangs. Duh. You do know that OKC has gangs too, right?

Eh, as long as schools are prominently marked 'Gun Free Zones', that's where those bastards will shoot them up.
You never hear of a massacre in a pawnshop, gun store or police station.
Golly gee willacres, why is that?

Or the hacking up of innocent people by MS-13. Trump talks about it but the MSM doesn't unless they talk about Trump talking about it. Then their story focuses on how Trump maligns every illegal immigrant as a murderer, rapist, or criminal (which they are by breaking our law illegally entering the US).

@SMemmett

I don’t know the answer to your question, or the number.

I’ll add my thread contribution with a question on another subject that receives few news headlines, is rarely discussed in public, politicians leave alone — and **could** be the single most destructive thing in America.

It’s especially damaging to school-age children, damaging to families in general, damaging to healthy relationships in general and has a long list of other negatives.

What industry dwarfs Hollywood in profits, makes more money than the NFL, NBA and Major League Baseball combined — and is completely free?

Drum roll please.........
