Heading up to Colorado next weekend, have a place on the Rio Grande between South Fork and Creede. Will fish the river around Coller bridge, but would like to go up high to some smaller creeks or lakes. Any suggestions on where to go? We have hit the river for years with spinning gear but the past couple of years have started learning to fly-fish. Thanks for any advice.

I've fished Collier, caught some, but for Gold water i wasn't that impressed plus it's right on the highway. I'd definitely hit the Rio Grande up above Creede..... lall public water if you go past Creede and up toward the Resevoir.... either below or above is both very good this time of year. Above you get the native Rio Grande Cuts (beautiful!). Average size of fish is worth the trip. That's what I consider my home waters....and except for a few weeks in the summer, that makes me always 750 miles from home. Lots of good small streams in that region, though most make you hike for the better fishing. If you drive over the passes to Lake City, the North Fork is a highly under-rated or unknown river- great fishing but a less public access. Stop and get a hamburger & fries at Freemons ranch - the place about 3/4 mile before you turn off the highway to head up to the resevoir road. Thsi is hunting season, so be careful, but you won't have much competition for the fishing at all. The aspens are gold right now. Take your camera! If you want anything more, email me at rockingKCranch@yahoo.com.
At any rate, tight lines. Come back and let us know how you did.

Came to look at deer pics and realized I never replied to TCP after we got back from the fishing trip. Greatly appreciate the information, we fished above and below the reservoir, I'd never been up there before but will be going back. You were right about the competition, we fished 3 days and only saw 1 or 2 others...but that may have been a sign - it was pretty slow for us. When we did see fish they were usually willing to bite, but we saw/spooked very few. The first 2 days the wind was howling so that didn't help matters for us as we're still learning to use the fly rod. I did catch my first cut-throat at Brewsters Meadow and we had enough hookups each day to keep it interesting. Burgers and staff at Freemons were great and we had some time to unwind, fart, cuss, and generally act like 16 year olds for a few days. Thanks again for taking the time to give us the advice.
