Cowboys vs Lehigh

Bad job by the coaches having Surber take bottom. You don't get points for being stubborn.

Don’t think he was beating him regardless and he needs to work on being underneath bigger HWTs.
He very likely would not have won, but at least it would have given him a chance. Surber gained nothing by going underneath. He was outweighed by 60 lbs or over 25%. That was the equivalent of John taking bottom against Mike Sheets in college. And IMO the work Surber needs is on his feet against the bigger HWTs. That's his best path to winning.

If you can’t get off bottom you aren’t going to win many. Wood had easily gotten to the leg for TDs twice. Taking down more than likely kept it to a decision. Surber needs to put on 20-25 pounds of muscle to be the HWT we expect.

Kept it to a decision? With a 26-6 lead in the final bout? That makes no sense.

Coaches try to put their wrestlers in the best position to be successful. That means taking neutral (or top) when necessary. Here are some examples - Brands had Ayala take neutral. Cael had Suriano take neutral. And Ryan had reigning 3x champ Stieber take neutral against Retherford.

I’m not talking about the coaching staff having him take down to avoid the major. The major was avoided because Wood decided to ride him the entire 3rd period.

Wood had shown he could quite easily get to the legs of Surber. Surber was outweighed by 60 pounds and Wood still looked quicker than him. Wood was far superior today in all 3 phases. Maybe our coaching staff felt like bottom was the best option.

We were watching different matches if you thought Surber was going to do something in neutral. With experience and more strength/weight Luke will be the one dishing these out soon.

I think it was unlikely he won even if he did go neutral. But if I'm not mistaken, Surber looked at the coaches and indicated he wanted to go neutral. That was after being ridden almost the entire 2nd period. So even he thought that was his best chance.

And really the bottom/neutral thing has been an issue for a while. A few years ago, Picc had a big lead on Lizak after the 1st period. The coaches had him take bottom and he ended up losing by a point. That type of thing hurts your seed at Nationals. Kaid was another one. He was elite on his feet, why have him go underneath against tough riders? IMO, the other coaching staffs have shown they are more flexible depending on the situation.

Do they not count anymore when the top guy is hanging on the leg?
I've been wondering that the last couple of duals actually. It seems like they're calling it inconsistently. They started calling it yesterday after John yelled at them. What gives? Did the rule change?

It sure doesn’t seem like it would be that difficult to put the riding time clock on the screen.
+1

Also a running total of team dual points would be nice. It's probably just another person on event staff to coordinate and program that additional information.

Wish list? Some old Batman-style graphics when points are scored. "Pow! 2 Point Takedown!" "Bam! 1 Point Escape!" Fun visuals + educating viewers.

Stall warnings go missed also. I’d rather have the video a little further away so the referee is in the picture. When it’s further away I can occasionally catch a glimpse of the daktronics scoreboard to see what the riding time is.

Without sounding like an Iowa fan what does it take to get stalling called? The ref yesterday wasn’t counting on the leg. In Gfeller’s match yesterday the guy on bottom should have been dinged several times. One of my pet peeves is when the referee knows how much time is left in the period and that is how they call it. 10 seconds left in the period and they don’t call a stalemate, they just let them sit there until the period runs out. If it is a stalemate call the stalemate. If it is rideouts in OT they don’t do that. Daton and Suriano for example. Call it consistently. If the bottom guy grabs the top guy’s arm when he’s trying to cut him that is stalling. Seriously, he is trying to keep the top guy on him. What else is that?

Yesterday was pretty bad, as the wife pointed out “Lehigh seems more interested in holding on for dear life than they do wrestling”. Ref just compounded the issue.

You don't learn how to get off bottom if you never go down there. NCAA tournament a different story/strategy.
Yes, it looked like he learned a lot.

BTW, Kaid took bottom against Seth Gross in the 2017 NCAA semifinals. He got majored.
