Construction of The Wall (WaPo)

I am only for the wall because Chuck was for the wall before Trump was for the wall. I honestly don’t care...it’s not a big issue for me. I’m simply enjoying the hypocracy on the left right now. I also think it is a great thing to shut down the government. I think it needs about a 40% haircut and when we shut it down for a few weeks occasionally it helps us see what is needed and what is not needed.

Its a government project, who thinks it will be done quickly or easily? The fact it will be hard does not mean we shouldn't do it. But on the plus side, we could make working on the wall the 'guaranteed jobs program' that O.C. wanted and we'd kill 2 birds with one stone. :)

10,000?! Democrats hate that many new jobs. They'd rather you be on the gov't payroll.

Do government contracts not provide jobs?

Did you read the article? Before even one section of wall gets erected...

1) Land/eminent domain legal challenges...could take years to solve.

2) Environmental studies have to be done.

3) A construction project of this magnitude? First priority, mobility...which means a substantial construction of hundreds/thousands of miles of road first. A bunch of different construction sites going at once.

4) Constrction of temporary/permanent cement mixing plants in close proximity to the border.

5) By the time that’s all done (assuming it did), you’re looking at 10,000 workers getting less than 200 miles done in a year or so.

Seems like an awfully big waste of expenditures that could’ve gone to more important infrastructure/education/healthcare projects in the first place.

All of these things are a factor in every major government activity. You build a new Highway and all of these apply. If you pass healthcare reform, how many lawsuits do you think will be filed (just look at the ACA). If these items prevented us from moving forward, then the goverment would actually do less than it does today (which would be impressive).

Sooooo...how about a cheaper and just-as-effective alternative? Like more fencing, more border agents and more technology and surveillance? It’s all there for trump to sign on to.

Fact is, he’s standing pat on a wall to appease his political base...is that something that should truly be celebrated, regardless of who’s doing it for any political party?

It's also a waste of expenditures to keep paying for healthcare, education, legal assistance, law enforcement, etc for people that aren't here legally. That's a lot of money that could've gone to more important infrastructure/education/healthcare projects.

More technology and surveillance is exactly the word salad I've referred to. There are zero details as to what this would entail or how it would actually reduce illegal crossings. Fencing is worthless as it does nothing to deter crossings. The only worthwhile item there is more agents, but that in and of itself isn't enough.
