I'm looking at buying a road bike. My friend that rides told me not to buy from a store, buy a nice used bike. He said I'll get far more for the money. He also told me to buy full carbon. If I like it, I'll probably get competitive with it fairly quickly.

Any suggestions for a beginner? He added me to a FB group for bikes & equipment for sale.

Adver, you're a crossfitter too aren't you? Does the pace of crossfit & cycling help each other? I've had to cut the running out, my doctor suggested taking up cycling. So, I talked to friends who mountain and road bike and settled on road. I'm going to buy something this weekend.

I've gone to 2 stores, Tom's & Trek, both on Riverside. Tom's had Giant & Scott that were around my price range, Trek had a few, but they're aluminum frames. Based on what they've got for the money, I'll probably buy used and have it tuned & fitted to me.

I do like Giant and Scott as well.

Crossfit and road cycling have almost nothing in common unless you really get into sprints/crits.

I'm a very, very average crossfitter but I dominate everyone including our coaches and regional/national athletes when we do an annual triathlon.

Crossfit and cyclocross/mtn biking are much more aligned.

I have a Specialized, I think 1 step above the intro and like it pretty good. I don't ride enough to tell you more than that but my son bot a Specialized frame and then finished it with other parts (much nicer bike than mine) and he really likes it.
