It was the late 1980's and I got lost in Philadelphia with the group I was with and ended up in the slums. It is something I will never forget seeing, it was a first for all of us. Our driver was shocked at just how bad the area was and ended up going slow, which we soon realized might put our lives in jeopardy. We were shocked how large the area was. I was thinking this does not include NY, Chicago, Detroit, LA, etc.... Knew it was bad, but shocked how big the area was.

I am comfortable with my manhood so I have no problem saying it brought tears to my eyes. Throwing money at issues does not solve them unless you use the resources properly. I went home that day angry that how could any of our tax dollars go out of this country when so many problems existed at home.

When I listen to the Dems mock the "carnage" in the U.S., I wonder how many have taken the time to go see an inner city slum, and how about doing that before you decide who is priviledged? How do you mock our President for being honest? What about teaching a day at an inner city public school and not the private school you send your kids to?

When are we going to get the balls to enforce our laws and root out crime? More police actions is going to cause more deaths by police, both accidental and in some instances perhaps hate. But look at chicago, the police has stopped hitting the beat, they only react to calls. This is why murders are up, I believe the Police is waiting for the murder rate to get so high they make their point and they will be told you will no longer be considered guilty until proven innocent on shootings and please go police. The police will make mistakes, but is chicago better off with no stop and frisk and the police turning their heads unless they get a call? Police actions are down like 80,000 per month in chicago and part of this is also the new report the mayor of chicago requires the police to fill out everytime they get involved with the public, police says it takes an hour to fill out. Mayor wants to stop racial profiling and all he has done is create more murder, combined with prior leadership creating a hostile environment towards police and the assumption every shooting is racially motivated.

Do not the residents deserve to be protected? Racial killings will always be wrong, but we have to support our Police.

Education needs to be addressed, education is a priviledge and not right in my opinion. I have a solution and on a trip back from Belgium thru D.C. I sat next to the 2nd highest ranking official in the education dept and he said I had it right but the country was not ready for it. You make the teacher no different than the Captain of a ship or boat, they have final say over who is in their class room. You screw up 3 times total in any class room and the teacher has to kick you out, you are done for the year. 3 chances for the entire year. For some parents school is just a daycare center and they keep other kids from learning. In the early 90's I taught JA at central middle school in Warr Acres - OKC to 8th graders, it was a zoo. I had to yell at times, I could go on and on. This is not even NY or Detroit. This guy told me in China you get one child and in China where you live determines what quality of school you go to. If your child is being difficult, the Principal comes one evening and talks to the family, you get one chance. If the child causes a problem again the next knock informs you the family is moving and the child is placed in a school that is not as good and for trouble makers. He says they have few problems and my solution is correct but the country will not stomach it, why? Why should kids wanting to learn be held back?

We need IMO to get back to policing, improving teachers, and getting the thugs out of schools, no one can move forward and get out of severe poverty if the only success they see is the drug dealers with money and they have no hope for an education. Jobs need to be created for sure, but why is everyone afraid to clean up the streets and get rid of the crooks and fix the class room? The dirty little secret in this country is that the teachers can not teach because the schools are becoming in some areas just a place for criminals in training to hang out before they graduate or get out of school for the day. Perhaps parents would enforce discipline if they knew the school was no longer going to provide day care.

America first. Invest in education and spend more on policing and for gods sake can we agree most police is not racist? Can we get programs going to get more minority police in this country?

Cleaning up is going to be a huge task, because it is out of hand, streets and class rooms in some areas are awful shape and no real difference exists between the two. Otherwise, more police are going to follow their chicago brethren and eventually maybe everyone shoots each other in the inner citiies and they will all be gone. This is what we are headed for, proof is chicago. But the Police is not going to risk themselves unless they know they are going to be treated fairly and supported and the paperwork for even breaking up a fight in the street is eliminated. We need a bunch of tough love.

Let's get our home front shored up. That includes slums. A good start is for the inhabitants to have job opportunities.

My company has been a vendor to Sec. 8 housing for almost 30 years. While most of these places were not considered slums several would qualify. Some of the things seen which can easily be corrected aren't done for a variety of reasons and many of those reasons are directly laid at the feet of the various governments oversight agencies. The city Sec. 8 housing authorities I've dealt with start with the attitude that all things wrong in the properties are the fault of the owners.

The kicked in doors, broken windows, and holes in walls are the owner's fault notwithstanding that the tenants caused these things. I've seen owner's replace sink disposals repeatedly due to tenants trying to grind up beer bottle caps and other metal objects. I have one client who has a full time trash picker who goes around every morning to collect beer bottles, McDonald's wrappers and other trash thrown off porches from the parties the night before.

I could go on with more (probably should write a book) but most of the problems in Sec 8 housing are the tenant's fault.
