Through 4 games, it's clearly been our problem. I'm not a big stats guy, but I went back and looked at where we ranked over the past 5 years in 3rd down conversion defense.
Currently: 112th
2016: 61st
2015: 92nd
2014: 74th
2013: 7th!!!!
Stats don't tell the whole story. I'll try to find it and look it up, but i feel we rarely get beat deep on throwing the ball. Maybe we give up fewer plays of 20+ yards than other teams? I know scoring defense compared to the rest of the league we've been solid.
Staistically, we are as bad as any team outside of maybe Tech in the Big 12 on third down over the last several years. There are teams in this league that do play good defense on third down, we're not one of them.
