Article

I don’t know how to link article but a good proposal on profit sharing in college athletics. If you google Texas Tech Alum Profit Sharing—it’s in the Fort Worth Star—maybe someone can link it. Smart people are realizing the way things are without boundaries isn’t going to work long term. Hard to be about kids and education when money comes first. Anyway, just thought some might enjoy reading. Good evening.

Gundy update on Covid - positives, protocols, etc

"The ultimate (COVID protocol) We want to play this game. We are going to play this game, unless
we can't find 11 players. We are masked up in meetings. We are masked on buses. Our team
meetings are outside. They are not in the facility. We moved them out to the tennis courts to spread
everybody out.
We're doing the best we can. Up to this point, we have been very fortunate. Our medical staff has
given us good information. Our players understand the importance of trying to be as cautious as
possible.
But also, we're at an unbelievable Bowl site, as you know. Guys are going to go to the Phoenix Suns
game tonight and they are going to wear masks and wear masks on the bus.
Are some players going to get the virus? They probably are. We have had just a few that have gotten
it over the last few days. I'm just -- as you watch and just try to gauge percentages, I would guess
there's going to be a few more who will get it.
But we are 100% fully committed to playing this game. We want nothing more than to be as healthy
as possible and to play this game, but we also want to be able to enjoy Scottsdale and we want to be
able to enjoy the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl. We are back to full protocol, which is what we had last
year. So far we have been fortunate. We have had good practices, and the large majority of us have
been healthy.

Don't doubt this- just wow how sold out we have become

Class of 2022 Thoughts

Several people had asked me to post thoughts about the 2022 recruiting class as it stands today after the early signing period, so here are my first batch of thoughts:

1) The class is mostly finished, but expect more attrition in the coming 2.5 weeks as well as announcements concerning players entering the NFL draft, returning for super senior seasons, or transferring via the portal. The deadline to declare for the draft is January 17th. Players have 3 days after declaring to withdrawl from the draft process without losing their collegiate eligibility. This means that by the end of the day of January 20th, the potential draft status of all college football players will be known, save for a handful of potential hardship cases that could wind up in a supplemental draft.

2) The combination of the portal and COVID bonus years has totally changed college football recruiting for the next few seasons. There is a whole lot more impact talent available for programs needing to fill holes than ever before. With non-graduate transfers gaining immediate eligibility, recruiting the portal is a much better quick fix for programs lacking at a couple of positions than HS and JC ever were. Every team will be active in the portal. There will be a wave of activity between New Year's Day and the February signing day and then another round immediately after spring practices. Full evaluation of any recruiting class needs to be held until that time for almost every school.

3) Recruiting classes should not be judged singularly, but in conjunction with the classes recruited on either side. Some years will be weak on certain position groups. Missing in one year is not a problem due to numbers. Missing in back to back years creates depth issues, and can begin to impact onfield results. Missing in 3 of 5 years puts enormous pressure on working the portal to avoid significant impact on game days.

4) The goal in recruiting is to recruit the best talent possible that fits needs, system, and culture. Skill players must have the ability to make plays. Linemen need to have developmental upside. Signing a balanced class with a handful of difference makers every year is a pathway for success.

Going into this recruiting class, it was important for the Cowboys to sign a quarterback, find early contributors at RB, get some immediate help at LB and OL, and identify quality players to build depth across the board.

Getting Older and Not Being Able to Go Back to Sleep

Does it continually get worse? I'm 38 and up until a year or two ago I could wake up in the middle of the night and go right back to sleep but not anymore.

Last night I was exhausted and went to bed about an hour earlier than usual on a worknight (9:30) and woke up to piss around 3. I maybe was able to get 15 minutes of total sleep after that tossing and turning before my alarm clock went off at 6:00. I feel fine on so few hours until the afternoon when I physically start nodding off at my desk. I've started taking magnesium in the evening and I think it helps a little bit.
