Article in WSJ today reviewing a book about Wooden, Jabbar and Walton made me realize it has been fifty years since I watched DAvid Thompson and NC State take down Walton in the national semifinals. NC State had to beat Maryland in the ACC finals to get in the playoffs- in those days only the champion of the ACC tournament got in the playoffs. Maryland had John Lucas, Len Elmore and Tom McMillon, maybe the best team ever not to make the tournament. The article also stated that Walton may have been the best college player ever, a statement I agree with with the caveat that I never saw Bill Russell in college.
