Everyone knows he played something resembling professional basketball very briefly overseas, and that he's been a commentator for a long time.

And a lot of people are saying that doesn't mean he's qualified.

Here's the thing, if you're Mike Holder you get to interview him (assuming that even matters in this case). You get to try to find out first hand whether or not he's been spending that time at ESPN and CBS talking at cameras and having nice hair, or if he's used the access that granted him to see how coaches all over the country do things. You get to see if he's been busy listening to his own voice or if he's been listening to others. Has he been collecting social media followers or building a viable network of real contacts?

Being in the media doesn't mean he's not prepared. It means he's had a different and unconventional career path for a possible head coach, but still one that, taken full advantage of, could be fantastic experience for a future head coach.

You do the home work and find out how well Doug's career has prepared him. Everything else certainly checks out. Then you make a decision.

If Holder does hire Doug I'm pretty damn sure it won't be just because he's an alum. That certainly made his name worth considering, but it won't be the determining factor.
