Why do politicians, on both sides, lie about their past?

Do they really think it won't come out? People in office and running for office obviously think we're a bunch of dumbchits. Insulting is how I look at it.

The lying accusations against Carson have been toned down quite a bit since the story first broke. It'll be interesting to see where that story finally settles.

I agree it's toned down and I'm sure if he applied to West Point he would have been offered a scholarship, but he didn't. I'm sure certain news outlets will run with it, but he shouldn't have said it.

He wrote it in the 90s well before he even entertained the idea of running for office.

Plus it isn't really a lie so much as a biographical embellishment.

If you run for President you have to expect to get grilled and regardless of what Carson says he isn't getting it any worse than most other front runners receive. However, the type of things they are picking at are absolute jokes. Almost all of them are things that boil down to semantics....was it an appointment or a full scholarship?....good grief. What I am much more concerned about is the painting of him and Jesus. That is creepy.

I'm not a religious person but I think you could label my value system mostly Christian.

I'd take a deeply religious person with a firm value system over a secular progressive like we have now. It looks to me secular progressive means situational ethics.

The deeply religious are scaring the shit out of me at this point. I thought Rand Paul was my pick until he jumped into social issues trying to get Ted Cruz and Uncle Huck's votes. Hell, Carson said the tax code should be 10% b/c that's what the bible says. I want someone that will use reason to do the right thing. If that is something out of the bible after doing a lot of research then fine. However, the deeply religious people I see right now claim to be constitutional, but their translation of the constitution is probably as sketchy as their translations of the bible. The worst part about this country right now is the polarization and corruption. I won't vote for anyone that seems to be a polarizing figure and there are many of them on both sides of the fence.

Hell, religious is fine, if you could find someone that's actually religious and isn't just using it to accumulate power. who's religious that actually advocates new testament christianity, with it's anti-materialism, just one marriage, pacifism, etc? I haven't seen a candidate actually endorse those things since... well, ever. I'm fine if someone is really religious -- they're not though. They only use the Bible when they like what it does for them politically. You sure don't see any conservatives calling for a return to biblical marriage ideals.
