Why are you a Republican?

So I can vote in the primaries?

That's the only reason I'm registered as a Republican.

It's not doing me all that much good in Colorado at the moment. Once I understand how the primary process has changed and if there is more change on the horizon I will reassess.

Would prefer to be registered independent, if for no other reason than my loathing of the two party system.

I'm not. Never have and don't have to declare a party affiliation. I've voted for people in both parties and independent/libertarians. Won't vote for any liberals or RINOs.

My dad told me to be one. Reagan was POTUS and my dad hated the Carter and Mondale Democrats. Only registered as an R to vote in primaries. The party left me behind long ago. Guess I need to change to independent.

I'm not, I'm an unaffiliated voter so I can't help you. All I could recommend to start to answer is tonrecommend you take a look at every issue on their platform and compare to your personal views.

And maybe prior to that, evaluate your value system and some light reading on what you feel the responsibilities of government should be to the governed.

I'm sure Thor could point you to dozens of books that would provide a framework from which to understand some "thinking " on the role of government and the intent of each government type. From there, you would generally align yourself with those that have effectiveness in implementing your values.

I'm not.

I have been in the past because they at least gave lip service to conservative fiscal policy. When they stopped even that in favor of the Patriot Act, mass surveillance, etc....I was out.

i hope trump gets away from this bush era patriot act nonsense as much as an unconstitutional obamacare

Interesting question. Why does anyone have to register for a specific party? Sort of like the jury summons I just received. It wants to know my religious preference. Why?

You can't serve on a capital case if you are morally opposed to the death penalty. Certain religions are morally opposed to the death penalty.

Do you remember how you became a Republican in the first place?

Sure, but it's a pretty shallow answer.

RNC Convention 1984....Dallas.....partied my ass off.....had to be a registered party member to get into the stuff/meetings/parties I did.

The first election I was old enough to vote in was 1976. We were coming out of the Vietnam era plus the Nixon years and I thought I was a radical and most of Oklahoma was still Democrat back then so I voted for Jimmy Carter.

I graduated in Dec.1980. It took an act of kindness by one of my good friends to get me on with a bank in OKC because it was very difficult for new grads to find decent opportunities.

I went to upgrade my vehicle and my good credit interest rate was 20%, I bought a house for $56,000 and my variable mortgage rate was 12%. I knew before I graduated I'd never back another Democrat President. I voted for Reagan and the Reagan years were very good to me both career wise and financially.

I'm registered Libertarian. But I avoid Dems due to their continual support of the welfare/entitlement state. They actively enact policies that reward those who'd rather do nothing and accept a hand-out over those who would at least try to raise themselves up. And as Dems have now moved even further to promote things like "White Privilege", they've simply moved even further away from my "take ownership for your actions" upbringing.

I was a republican. Started because I loved Reagan. Continued because I was very conservative in my views when I could first vote. Loved Newt. Started to change as I became less socially conservative and more interested in civil liberties. Switched to independent when I renewed my license a couple years ago. Even though I'm independent I can't foresee any scenario where I would vote for a democrat.
