I thought it was very tasty and, as you say, a good transition to smokey/Islay scotches. Over the last couple years I have definitely moved that direction with Ardbeg and Lagavulin being regular rotations in my buys.
There is a whisky and cigar lounge in the Deep Deuce area that makes a very good Ardbeg Old Fashioned. They also host whisky tastings every few weeks and I have been to a couple and those helped me expand my likes and knowledge for sure.

Whiskey Fest in Springfield on Jan 26th. The wife and I have tickets to the rare tasting. This will be our 4th year going.

I liked the Ardbeg after trying a handful of 1oz bourbon pours. Not sure I'd jump on it fresh out of the gate though.
It’s tasty and I think you nailed the sherry impact.
As far as peat and smoke, start with maybe a highland park 12. Drink it neat. I didn’t like the bigger scotches until a couple years ago. And I just decided to dig in and explore - due to a friend who is a true connoisseur. Now I pretty much always buy isla. Still keep a few others around, such as balvenie double wood and a glen morangie varietal, but if I’m drinking for me it’s almost always lagavulin 16.
Was out with my brother and dad in Scottsdale this weekend and picked up the lagavulin 1998 distillers edition. Superb. As an aside bottles are, on average, 20 bucks cheaper in Arizona. It’s crazy. Told dad he’s going to be my scotch mule.
This really seems like a question you'd ask someone that collects Hummels or old quilts.

Aberlour 16 .. I had always bought and drank the Aberlour A'bunadh but went to a tasting and had the 16 .. It was fantastic.
Ardbeg Grooves - Unfortunately you probably cannot find this as it is their Ardbeg Day whisky this year but if you happen to be at a bar or find a bottle somewhere, it is superb. If you hate it, I will take it off your hands.
Anyone had the WhistlePig Rye since it came to Oklahoma last month? I have not yet but will probably get one soon.

I have Whistle Pig 12 and 15 at my house and had a tasting of the Boss Hog edition. Outstanding stuff.
