Museum slammed after hiring white curator for African art exhibit

The Brooklyn Museum has sparked outrage in the black community after tapping a white woman to curate its vast African art collection.

On Monday the museum appointed Kristen Windmuller-Luna, 31, who has a Ph.D. in African art history from Princeton University, lectures in Columbia University’s department of art history and archaeology, and once worked as an educator for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where she was “responsible for adult and college gallery tours in the African galleries.”

Despite the stellar résumé, her hiring left some wondering why a qualified person of color did not get the post.

Hypocrisy and intolerance are their M.O. contrary to their rhetoric.

It’s exactly the opposite of what we were taught as elementary school kids in the eighties. The world was taking some bigger steps globally, ethnicities were interacting more and we were taught everyone is the same. Ignore their skin color. Appreciate culture, but ignore the ethnicity. Everybody just wanted the opportunity to get ahead. I refuse to move on from that. I’ve questioned it in my mind enough times to know that’s my opinion.

100%

Judge people by their actions (the show the content of their character), not by the things that they can't control (skin color, heritage, up bringing, gender, sexual orientation, etc).

I refuse to back off from that. As such, I also refuse to have any transitive guilt for traits about me that I don't control.

That is all well and good, but again, we cannot ignore certain race realities lest we forfeit our country and its heritage.

So what is our “heritage” of which you speak?

What do we lose if we think like Chi and HSH, ignoring “certain race realities”?

Those maps paint a picture of white vs. pop in the “heritage” discussion to me.

Start with basic civics and the whitewashing of our history, founding fathers, Thomas Jefferson statues, etc.

Maybe I'm dense or myopic but I'm not getting your point at all. I'm truly lost.

As a kid of the 90s I was also taught to ignore skin color. If Obama’s presidency and the 2016 general election taught me anything it’s the Democrat party certainly doesn’t. It’s their whole platform, different victim heirarchies largely based on skin color. Guess who’s at the bottom?

Trying to “be better” and simply ignoring that fact is fighting with both hands tied behind your back IMO. I’d rather discuss realities and the future implications of them on our country that I do not want to see turn socialist. Some may think we are past the point of no return based on demographic projections but I choose to remain optimistic.

I agree that the left uses race as a weapon to get what they want. That's kind of the point of my initial post. The question is how do you combat that?

My opinion is you keep the moral high ground by being right. And by being right, I mean color blind, gender blind, race blind, sexual orientation blind, etc. We'll win that eventually because we are on the right side of history. Just as the left USED to be in the 60's.

The right was the ones outlawing speech. Now it is the left.
The right was the ones segregating people by color. Now it is the left.
The right was the ones defining people by sexual orientation. Now it is the left.

It may take a generation, but what's right will win out.

It really is starting to sound like you’re talking about preserving a heritage of whiteness versus an attack by POC and those that “use” them in some way.

I don’t want to think that, but with your continued focus on demographics alone it’s hard to see it any other way.

Personally, I believe Chi and HSH are accurately describing the heritage we should be seeking to preserve.

I respect both of your viewpoints and understand your points. However, I do not assume what’s right will win out simply because that’s what’s happened in the past. Think of the historical context. Hitler came much more dangerously close to winning than most people realize I think.

The Left controls and dominates Media, Hollywood, (I’d even argue the Senate for the most part), and our schools creating indoctrinated zombies. We do not have a generation to hope for the best, and the time for fighting is now.

I’m all about preserving western culture. But I’m against putting color limitations on its preservation.

The left has already won. It's just a matter of when it will be finalized

The fact that the left controls mass media, education, and for the most part government, should give any of us a hint as to where all of this is headed.

The Clinton Scotts and syskatines of this world are going to be much happier with the state of our country 20 years from now than I will be.

Doesn't mean I'm going to take any of this lying down.

Being "right" in this day isn't worth two hoots and a g-damn when the opposition doesn't care about anything but enforcing its narrative and winning/keeping power. The right side of history will be but an asterisk footnote - too little, too late, never had a chance.

I hear that and understand your perspective.

I just believe that all this crap from the left is going to backfire on them because of all the logical inconsistencies. Their identity politics fail when taken to their logical conclusions because the individual is the ultimate minority.

People will see that once they continue to put people into groups.

Theoretically correct, but I'd argue that the "victim culture" created by (insert names here) can't be overcome by logical conclusions due to the forces behind (MSM, left, etc.) that benefit from perpetuating the lie. Sadly, I think many in the country are too stupid to realize they're being used/played.

Better check that _________________ privilege.

Do Americans EVER stop talking about race?

Ostatedchi's avatar is about the most appropriate one ever I've seen.

I'm sure this board has plenty of concrete examples of diversity and inclusion on the "right". The recent history is truly a milestone for ya lol...

The answer is.... once the conversation (whatever that may be) is started, you must be prepared to address it comprehensively and to its end. That requires a high degree of focused effort. There is no magic bullet...only aggregate, focused effort.

The left has always had racism. It was just a matter being racists for a good cause or the right reason. Whether it was affirmative action hiring, african-american scholarships, etc. etc. There will always be people of different cultures, races, religions, and genders. We don't "combat racism" we should foster "inclusion and diversity."

I'm calling BS on some of these maps and need to see the backdrop data. For example, it is mathematically impossible that the Women map is mostly blue, but the White Women map is mostly red. Lost all credibility with me, so I didn't study further. If that one is wrong, then I'm sure the others are biased as well.

You're calling "BS", yet a majority of white women voted for Trump. Brilliant!

I wondered that same thing. But, it is possible if, for example, white women breakdown is 55/45 and non-white women breakdown is 10/90.

Absolutely not true. Early indications are that Generation Z (the generation born after 1995) will be the most conservative since WW II. They are strongly libertarian with conservative leanings. They did a huge survey of high school kids in this cohort in Fall 2016 and the males supported Trump by a 4:1 margin. The women supported Trump by a 55:45 margin. They might not identify as "Republican" but they abhor and do not trust big government.

I hope you're right.

Then again, Trump isn't necessarily conservative.

I hope this is correct. In the last election, the Millenials voted overwhelmingly for Clinton

A while ago (maybe a year) NZPoke posted a link to one of the widely known Youtube stars (a young guy in his early 20s who makes stupid Youtube videos and makes more money than probably all of us on this board) mocking the idea of "diversity." No Millenial would ever do that. A small but very telling example.
