What has made this current run what it has been, has been the contributions of each individual and role players playing their role to the fullest.

Kendall Smith - perhaps the key component. The dude has been running the show brilliantly. He has become the scoring threat at the point that a team must have and has been money in clutch situations. Great leader! We’re blessed to have landed such a player!

Cam McGriff - The soph from SGP has been a matchup nightmare that opponents have no answer for. Sag and he hits a trey. Play tight and he blows by opponents with an impressive dunk. Plays great away from the ball. And his defense and rebounding have been tenacious. He plays - and I love using this term in coaching - with reckless abandon. The HS basketball coach who told me he wasn’t good enough to be a contributor at a Big XII school was a fool (and I was a fool for listening to him).

Trey Waters - unsung, but in every run we make during a game, he seems to have hit one or two three-pointers during the run.

JC - with the burden of having to carry the team off his shoulders (as it was last year), he’s back to being that sort of silent assassin. He does all the little things well. Rebounds, hits 3s, good free throw shooter. Him and KS playing in sync marvelously right now.

Big Mitch - talk about a guy who does the little things in a big way! Tough rebounder, great FT shooter, keeps plays alive either with back taps or diving on the floor for a loose ball. The dude has come a long way.

Tavarius Shine - anyone notice that this run of ours coincided when he came back from injury? He’s a great sixth man, plays great defense, and can cover for our 2, 3, and even 4 spots (considering he often times comes in for Cam). He’s versatility has been a big key.

Yankuba Sima, Brandon Averette, Thomas Dziagwa - they all come in and provide quality minutes to spell the other six without a massive drop off. They each have there strengths. Sima: shot blocker; DZ: 3-point shooter; BA: ball handler. Those guys give us a nice 9-player rotation.

And at the center of things has been HC Mike Boynton - and his staff. In my opinion, the guy could have easily been Big XII Coach of the Year if you base it on who got the most out of his talent.

The ability to go to play nine has helped the keep us fresher than many other teams, which is another reason I think we’ve had this late season surge where others have been fading.

There are some flaws in this team (if we run up against a lot of size, we struggle; we’re not always good in the half court offense; foul trouble can plague us), but this team has jelled and has come a long way.

Yes, it’s been a nice team effort.
