What a great year...

For me, this was the most enjoyable Cowboy wrestling season in a long time. Just wanted to share my top 10 thoughts about the past year before going into wrestling hibernation over the summer.

1. John Smith flat out impressed me once again. A 2nd place finish to a stacked PSU team with an injury riddled young lineup. Wish I could think of one move he could have made that would have produced a better outcome for 2015/16. Bravo coach.

2. I will miss Ringer. I don't know how many times I said to myself "owww, I bet that hurt" while he was wrestling some 165 pound deer looking into the headlights. He is now officially the fourth member of my most enjoyable Cowboy to watch group with Mocco, Z, and Jordan Oliver.

3. Austin Marsden was really pretty good, just not the best. Same for Eddie. I will miss them too.

4. What finally clicked on inside Nolan Boyd's head? How impressive were his low shots and riding skills? Nearly the same reaction for Collica. I'm not sure either will be the best, but they are both pretty good and I'm glad they are Cowboys.

5. Chandler Rogers may have the best understanding of leverage of any wrestler I have ever seen. Ditto for his brother. He will be a tough match up for anyone at 65 if he can make the weight, including Chance if he stays. I see him as having the greatest upside potential of any wrestler on the team next year.

6. Kaid Brock pinning Brewer was the pivotal moment of the year; the point at which the whole ship turned around. It looked bleak up to that point. See #1 above...

7. Dean Heil is definitely the Rodney Dangerfield of NCAA wrestling at the moment. Got no respect at all this year. I suspect he will get some next year, especially after another year in the weight room. I keep forgetting that he was only a Soph this year....

8. I wasn't really sure what to expect from Joe Smith based on his HS career. After seeing him wrestle this year, how he has reshaped his body, and how tough he is, I have upgraded my expectations for him. He impressed me, especially given how many young people never manage to get out of a successful parent's shadow. He and Heil have inherited the program's mantle as the face of OSU wrestling for the next few years.

9. I'm not worried about Penn State. They are obviously cheating and skirting the rules and will be caught by the NCAA and their program given the death penalty. Oh well, I can dream can't I?

10. Until next year, my hope remains that Kaid Brock returns to full health, Austin Schafer is the second coming of Nick Gwiazdowski, Crutchmer heals fully, and Nic Picc is truly as quick, strong, and well-conditioned as he looks in the videos I have seen of him. I'm getting more optimistic about our future teams by the day!

What a great year it was...

My favorite moment of the year was the look on Coach Smith's face after Dean had won the title, it was the sincerest look of pride and joy I have seen on a coach.

My favorite thread of the year!

Thinking about the adversity these guys came through this year makes it all the more impressive. These are life lessons these boys will use off the mat as well.

For Oklahoma State to finish a solid second place with all of the lineup changes they had this year was pretty remarkable. As a Penn State fan I see OSU and Ohio St as the top contenders along with PSU for the next few years. Replacing Ringer and Marsden won't be easy, but you've got some pretty good options at 65, and I think Piccininni and Brock will help make up some of those points. Heavyweight is a weak spot for now, but it's a long time between now and next season.

I agree. I usually cheer for Penn State when not facing the Cowboys. My daughter went to Grad school there. Love the Creamery.

I too have noticed the lack of respect for Heil. He had proven himself all year, and wrestled a whose/who in that weight class. I'm sure he would rather please John Smith than some empty headed message board fans.

The Hawkeye Report Forum kicked you off because of your stupidity and your wanting to cause trouble. Now your trying your luck and your stupidity again. This moron is "nothing but trouble" Oklahoma State fans.

??? How in the name of God would even the most thin skinned oxygen deprived human interpret anything in any post here as inflammatory in nature. The iowa board banned me for pointing out the terrible schedule. I was proven correct of course.

Liked your post, but it has been a long time since you visited campus hasn't it? The creamery or the dairy bar as most call it has been gone for some time now. A state of the art research facility now sets where the old dairy processing building was. Come back and see all of the other great changes on campus. You can also watch some great wrestling!!

Great thread and couldn't agree more with the OP. Lots of great moments and memories. I was in the car heading to the dual in Norman and late as usual, so I had to listen to Kaid's match on the radio. We dang near drove off the highway when he stuck Brewer....pure elation. I've probably watched it 20 times on flo since.

Three other moments for me: The first was Collica beating Tsirtsis at NCAAs. Say what you want about Tsirtsis not being fully healthy, but watching Anthony's reaction after the match and the confidence it seemed to breed in him was pretty cool. The second was Chandler's win over Ethan Ramos during the dual in Stillwater. It may not have been pivotal in the context of the season as a whole, but it was just plain fun to watch. And the third was watching Preston Weigel come of age in the Big 12 tourney. I know his NCAA tourney wasn't what he wanted, but I expect this young man will be very competitive in the years to come. For me, watching young wrestlers realize their potential has always been one of the most enjoyable parts of cheering for the Cowboys.

I remember following Dean on Twitter when he was a HS Sr and he had posted about a pet that had died....hamster maybe? And would post about Dragonball Z and Pokemon and stuff like that. I figured he'd be a good wrestler, and probably good in the classroom. Kid turns out to be a killer. And probably still good in the classroom. It was fun to see him win it.

This team has been fun to watch for years. Dieringer was so dominant for so long I wonder if people lost fact of how special he truly was. He represents everything great about this sport. Chandler provided many a thrill, Dean beat the top 16 ranked wrestlers at the weight minus maybe the 14th ranked guy and some of them more than once, what a year. Nolan beating Gabe at Cornell was amazing. Kaid pinning the returning national champ on his home floor is the picture on my facebook page. We pulled up a little short this year but 35 is close.

Go Pokes
