@andegre

Just curious, do the Elo ratings only take wins & losses into account? Or are bonus point wins factored in somehow?

I've been looking at some of the elite guys to see how their ratings compare.

Bonus wins are factored in.

It actually uses the match score differential as a metric in the algorithm. So if someone wins 5-2, the "3" is used as the "K" value in the algorithm. If it's a TF 17-1, then 16 is used. Pins, INJ, DQ, etc are counted as 20-0.

Is it valid to compare the ratings for top wrestlers over time? I know you started the site in 2014, so guys like David Taylor, Logan Stieber, and Alex Dieringer are lower than they normally would be. And maybe as a result, Zain Retherford should be a little higher because his win over Stieber would have earned him some additional points.

But in general, can I compare guys like Zain, Nickal, Gable, Nolf, Lee, Fix & Yianni? Or has the algorithm changed over time so it's really not apples to apples?

I don't think so.

The rankings have gone through numerous algorithm changes through the years. And some of those years I will re-process rankings from ALL seasons, and others I only re-process the prior season. So it's not always apples-to-apples for wrestlers from different time periods.

Also, when the rankings first started, EVERY wrestler was rated a 1200 that first season, so it was "harder" for a wrestler to move up quickly to get to their proper rankings. Whereas, all subsequent years, only NEW wrestlers in college will start with a 1200, while other wrestlers that have had ratings/rankings from prior seasons will start the season with a rating other than 1200. That gives that new wrestler (a 1200) an easier chance of moving up quickly when they beat someone that's already rated a 1300, 1400, etc...
