Was working during the game yesterday, and out on the town last night. Debated on whether or not I wanted to watch, but glad I am doing so. Some observations.
With 1 minute to go before halftime, both teams have 6 fouls, and I haven't seen any bad calls. As a matter of fact, there have been chances for the refs to help KU, and they have not done so. It has been a well called game, and a fairly called game. There is a significant FT disparity, but that is because we have fouled KU players in the act of shooting and they have not fouled our guys while they were shooting.
Halftime. CuJo has really showed up. He's been solid on D, and has been hitting his jumpshots. Had had a couple of nice drives to open holes in the defense. If he can consistently shoot a solid percentage, he can be a big part of the turnaround that most of us are expecting next season. Cam of old is back. Hitting his jumpshots, playing physical under the basket on both ends of the floor. Dz started out on fire, then cooled off significantly. He missed quite a few wide open shots that he usually hits. Cam, Yor and CuJo also had a few wide open mid range shots barely rim out. If Ice could just finish his layups, and a couple of really good shots fall, we would be leading by 10+ at halftime.
2nd half starts with 4 really strong defensive possessions by the good guys and no points for KU. A really nice drive and score by Dz.extends the lead to 7. Bad shooting Cam has returned. KU hits a 3. Our offense has gone cold. Higgins makes 2 questionable calls against us on the same KU possession, followed by a charge on Yor-the defender had his entire left foot in the restricted area. Next possession, Yor gets hammered right beneath the basket with no call. Ku's offense is now hitting on all cylinders. KU now up by 4, with help from the officials. Waters injured. Dz hammered with no call. Worst call so far. Lightfoot scores right beneath the basket. Dz called for fouling him despite not even touching him.
Yor picks up 4. Here comes DD. 3 threes in a row for us gets us back within 3 points. Ice actually finishes a layup and we are down by 1.
10 minutes to go. In the game, KU has committed 11 fouls and we have been called for 14. The FT disparity is significant, but only because most of our fouls have been in the act of shooting.
Another foul by KU, not called, resulting in Cam hitting the floor very hard. Guys are really playing hard, with no Lindy or Yor available. Dz and DD are both severely lacking in ability to move laterally, making it easy for KU to get by them, but the other 3 players (mainly Cam) are doing a good job of rotating and picking up the driver.
8 minutes to go. 2nd half fouls even at 7. We are into the 1 and 1 for the first time in the game. Waters returns.
7 minutes to go. Up by 5. Our guys still playing with a lot of injury. KU getting a lot of offensive rebounds (mostly on long rebounds). Ice and Cujo both miss layups. KU defense really locking us up.
3 mins to go. Playing hard. Fouls even at 8 per team. Up by 3. Ice misses another layup. Jump ball gives it back to KU.
2 mins. Cam playing like a man. Lindy not limping. Game tied. Cam fouls out. That pretty much does it. KU only up by 1, but loss of Cam really hurts on both ends.
Biggest takeaway. Officiating had about a 4 minute window of being slanted to KU, but was otherwise pretty fair.
