You poor dumb bastard.

Q: Did Sinclair Lewis say, "When Fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross"?

A: This quote sounds like something Sinclair Lewis might have said or written, but we've never been able to find this exact quote. Here are passages from two novels Lewis wrote that are similar to the quote attributed to him.

From It Can't Happen Here: "But he saw too that in America the struggle was befogged by the fact that the worst Fascists were they who disowned the word 'Fascism' and preached enslavement to Capitalism under the style of Constitutional and Traditional Native American Liberty."

From Gideon Planish: "I just wish people wouldn't quote Lincoln or the Bible, or hang out the flag or the cross, to cover up something that belongs more to the bank-book and the three golden balls."

There was also a play by Sherman Yellen called Strangers in the late 1970s which had a similar quote, but no one, including one of Lewis’s biographers, Richard Lingeman, has ever been able to locate the original citation.

Other variants include one from James Waterman Wise, Jr. in the Christian Century(Feb.5, 1936) who noted that Hearst and Coughlin were the two chief exponents of fascism in America. If fascism comes, he added, it will not be identified with any "shirt" movement, nor with an "insignia," but it will probably be "wrapped up in the American flag and heralded as a plea for liberty and preservation of the constitution" (245). Another version isfrom Halford E. Luccock, in Keeping Life Out of Confusion (1938): "When and if fascism comes to America it will not be labeled 'made in Germany'; it will not be marked with a swastika; it will not even be called fascism; it will be called, of course, 'Americanism.'" Harrison Evans Salisbury in The Many Americas Shall Be One (1971) remarked "Sinclair Lewis aptly predicted in It Can't Happen Here that if fascism came to America it would come wrapped in the flag and whistling 'The Star Spangled Banner'

Reagan’s was a hollow knock off of a cobbled together misquote.

We’ve found no record of anyone, other than Reagan himself, having made the “profound” statement that “If fascism ever comes to America, it will come in the name of liberalism.” Most likely the future President was recalling a variant of a maxim (commonly misattributed to author Sinclair Lewis) holding that “When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross.”

Which reminds me of another famous Reagan quote

"Uhhhhh"<diaper fills rapidly>

I think you're confusing Reagan with Joe Biden.
I'm sure Joe and Donald are in the same club, but no one is breaking Reagan's diaper record. That one is up there with Barry's yards per game record and John Stockton's career assist record.

I don't care what he did in his diaper. I care what he did for America.

You know, starting the longest peacetime period of American prosperity in history. And he actually got help from Democrats, back when they actually cared about the country too.

Reagan didn't do any of that. He was too busy filling diapers.

It's hilarious how easily you make their point while desperately trying to not make their point.

That's definitely an el lol.

It's the rove/Roy cohn deal. Accuse your opponent if what you've done. Lewis had the memorable line, it looks true, so use it against libs. Be a pathological liar... Accuse your opponent of lying. Get caught shaking down Ukraine... Accuse your opponent of it. Trump legitimized it for the feeble minded, they didn't have a moral influence to instill basic values so they'll assume the charismatic leader's values.

Take AC. I remember when he viewed trump as a lying joke. He heard the repetition and here we are, he's all about trump now.

@AC2017 is a great example of someone who was a never Trumper, but kept an open mind, educated himself, saw what was proven right, what was proven wrong and has reluctantly chosen to support the president and crush the unAmerican #resistance (coup enablers, useful idiots etc).

He found the right info (not hard to find a fantastic source - it’s right here in the Rivals network).

He’s a great American.

His opinions that Trump was a dishonest joke changed. Trump became honest and his character improved, I guess.

I voted for Trump in 2016.

Like there was a real choice. Dem options are even worse this time.

That being said, Trump is a big improvement over Romney, McCain, Bush 41, and Bush 43.
