TWD Premiere

When his eye was bulged I thought. Ok maybe you can pull through.

They wanted to create the most hated character in television history -- and they did.

A couple of things.

Watched part of Talking Dead, and Kirkman pointed out that what happened was necessary in order for Rick's character to capitulate and agree to work for Negan. I think that makes sense.

The other think I am trying to remember...Didn't Rick tell the Governor something similar to what he told Negan? "Some day I am going to kill you". I think he actually told him that he would kill him with a particular machete and that is how it shook out.

FWIW, Negan is still alive in the comic books. Just saying....

Actually, though the crowd is hating on Negan, and for good reason, if you really think about it, this all falls squarely on Rick's shoulders.

He's the one who made the deal with the people over at the Hilltop Colony to basically take a hit out on Negan. This, without doing even the most basic of research or reconnaissance on Negan, his group or their capabilities. He just sets out without really thinking things through, carries out an attack on one of Negan's outposts and then gets his tit caught in a wringer as a result.

IMHO, he's as responsible or more for the deaths as Negan is. Shooting first and asking questions later is often a poor strategy.

Rick didn't kill the Governor. I think it was Michonne

I think you are right. Maybe I am thinking about the guy who was in charge of Terminus. There was someone who he told he he would kill with "that machete right there" and he ended up being correct.

Classic greek tragedy - with our hero being punished for his hubris.

With all the talk about this being over the top, I disagree. They just firmly re-established yesterday that they've been setting this line in the sand up for years, and that nobody - not even beloved OG characters are safe in this world. I think yesterday's show re-established credibility and brought Rick down several notches, opening the door for new leadership and characters.

Very excited about this season the more I think about it.

With all the talk of which one gets killed in the offseason, it was genuinely shocking to see two of them get beaten to death in front of the group who could do nothing to stop it. Powerful TV IMO and TWD re-established it's dominance last night - and in my opinion had been in danger of becoming watered down.

Now it's becoming less of a zombie movie and more of a Mad-Max post-appocalyptic human dystopia. Really nicely rebooted itself and made all the main characters vulnerable again IMO.

I had been on the Abraham was the one beaten to death train for quite a while. Just by looking at the blood spot on Rick's faith, I determined it had to have been someone stationed to his right-hand side due to the "splatter angle."

(BTW, was anyone else bothered by the fact the blood on Rick's face never dried? Blood splattered on someone doesn't stay look fresh and bright for hours upon hours, at some point it would have dried and coagulated on his face. For a show known for it's make-up effects, I thought that was one major glaring error on the part of their make-up team.)

When Darryl took his shot, I thought 'uh-oh' two are going down, but it caught me off-guard who ended up paying for Darryl's punch. But, that actually makes sense to me. Don't take out punishment on the one who did it, take it out on someone else so you can better keep the others in line. Though someone may be willing to risk their own lives, they don't want the blood of another "innocent" person on their hands.

I though it was Abraham too for some reason, but the splatter angle had nothing to do with it. The blood on Rick's face came from Negan shaking his club and spraying blood toward's Rick.

While I agree that Rick screwed up as a leader, to say "IMHO, he's as responsible or more for the deaths as Negan is", is crazy talk.

Agreed.

Rick, and his group, killed a bunch of sleeping "innocent" people as a preemptive strike. They didn't realize that those people were part of a group that had more soldiers than they could possibly imagine. They underestimated their opponent, but it wasn't all their fault. They based their plan of action on information they got from the Hilltop community. Turns out that the Hilltop didn't know as much about Negan's group as they thought they knew.

In the end, Rick and his group got off lucky, as Negan has probably lost 30 plus "soldiers" since the hostilities began and Rick has now lost 3 (with 1 being held captive). I think that gives us an indication as to how many men/women Negan has, and how disposable he considers them. I suspect that he has more people than he can easily provide for, and figures that Rick's group did him a favor by culling the numbers. He could have easily just wiped all of them out, then taken control of Alexandria, but he figures that Alexandria won't fight back now that he has completely demoralized the leaders of the community and shown them how powerful he is.

I did notice that, along with killing 30 or so walkers that's still all he had on his face when he got back in the motor home.

Also, how did the hatchet Rick used end up on top of the RV? Didn't Negan toss the thing out the door?

Yet, Rick crawls up on top and there it is?

Marshal,

Rick agreed to kill people, bottom line. And his crew killed quite a few more of Negan's people than Negan did in retaliation.

I would say he actually brought it upon himself and his crew to a large degree.

Obviously Negan is a psychopath, but Rick's certainly not walking around with "clean hands" here. No moral high ground for Rick to claim (or not much).

The over son who actually kills another person is clearly more responsible for the killing than anyone else. Glenn was only killed as a result of. Darryl's attempt to fight back. How does Rick bear responsibility for that? It was always a matter of time until Negan and his troops came calling to Alexandria.

He threw it on top of the motorhome. I kept thinking when he was up there that he should just jump up and land on the ac unit and come crashing down.
