It would have been great if the last GOP president talked like this — and backed it up by pointing to strong manufacturing job creation + rising wages.

Better than sending our kids to die in Iraq.

There was nothing “conservative” or constitutional about bogging us down in the Middle East for a generation.

the last gop president was a tool like the rest

the debt of gratitude this nation owes trumps leadership will be felt long after the feelers everyone’s has that are hurting

Would cost a kit more if made here. Chinese workers make $150 a week

I would have loved to have seen how Donald would have handled things after 9/11.

Motorola assembled phones in Austin TX for a while and claimed it cost them like $10 more a phone over the China units

The only have about $340 in the phone. They could build them here if they wanted

It’s always a surprise to me to see how government officials, politicians like our Dear Leader, and, apparently, people who comment on this board seem to think they know best how to run companies like Apple than the people who are paid to do so. Government officials screw up more things than one can count and people still want them to control more aspects of our lives.

Charging over double what you have in them is more an issue with YOU than it is the tarrifs .

No it isnt.

Maximizing your profit margin is the point and goal of every company.
But, blaming the uptick in tariffs is an easy way to deflect. Not saying maximizing their profits is a bad thing, but they can piss off if they're going blame tariffs for making their shit devices MORE expensive . Yet, they have sweat shop labor..

This makes zero sense. You do know trump was a business man until 2 years ago right?

Being a crony capitalist real estate developer in New York does not necessarily qualify someone to run a company like Apple.

But you are missing the point. The government has no more moral authority to tell Apple how to manage its affairs than it should have to tell you how to manage yours. If people don’t like the way Apple operates they don’t have to buy its products. Publicize anything you want about how you disagree with Apple’s operations. But for the love of God quit demanding the government to intervene on your behalf. It’s the shortcut to tyranny.

You called him a government official like he didn’t know his way around the business world. That would apply to anyone elected in that town except Donald trump. Crony capitalist bs he employed thousands of people negotiated thousands of building contracts and beat schedule and went under budget more times than he failed. And fail he did as has every exceptional business man.

As far as shortcut to tyranny get a hold of yourself. They guy is looking out for American workers. BOTH parties are in the back pockets of giant corporations. Finally a guy is looking out for the hard hats and card punchers and he still can’t win. Call it protectionism or whatever you want but when every other country practices their own protectionism it is foolish not to look out for your own. In my opinion.

You are still missing the point. I called him a politician, not a government official. To me a government official is a permanent bureaucrat that transcends the short life of a politician. A government official is an unelected permanent worker in one of the alphabet soup agencies that are established by politicians to oversee and regulate the lives of citizens.

I am not talking specifically about Trump’s tariffs, although that certainly matters. I’m talking about the cavalier attitude people have adopted that it is justified for the government to tell people how to run their businesses. If Apple wants to have their products made oversees that’s none of our business beside deciding whether to support Apple’s decision by buying or not buying its goods. The philosophical principle that allows the government to tell Apple how to operate is the same principal that allows the government to tell you how to conduct your private life. Giving the government that power puts us on a slippery slope toward serfdom.

Moral authority and Apple (well, most big business) is laughable at best.

Think they could have persuaded Donald to send American blood and treasure into the Iraqi sand box?

Agree, but I think you are over-interpreting the tweet. It clearly says to avoid the taxes and tarriffs, Apple can build here in America. Its not just a government directive. And every government creates policies (in this case tarriffs) as incentives to business activities they would prefer.

You are correct that we are interpreting differently. I see the tweet as an in-your-face threat: run your business like we tell you to do, or face consequences you won’t like. You seem to see it as friendly advice coming from a kindly bureaucracy.

I agree that every government does this sort of thing. I argue that no government should. It flies in the face of a free society and is totally contrary to a free market.

It is bald authoritarianism. Maybe a mild form, but mild authoritarianism has a way of becoming intolerable. Look at Venezuela. In one generation it has become a bloody dictatorship. Neither of us want to see that happen here.
