It really is amazing, he's such a transparent coward and uses the military at every turn to try and bolster his image.

If he's referring to the generals that he has appointed into his cabinet (such as Mattis) then technically they are HIS generals. But I guess when you can't criticize his message (get us out of the Middle East Wars, which I think the left supports although I've become less sure the more I watch and read the news), all that remains is criticizing the rhetoric he uses.
