The Jeff Bridges version was just on AMC. Both the John Wayne and Jeff Bridges versions are excellent.

I think the original is underappreciated for John Wayne's humor, he gave a great performance and deserved the Oscar.

If you haven't read the book you are missing out, it is a great read and gives details and insight that a movie just can't provide.

I agree with the OP. Both are very enjoyable movies from different eras. I'm a huge, huge fan of the Coen brothers and they did a great job with the remake. I'd call it a near masterpiece.

On the other hand I also have an appreciation for John Wayne and he was great in the role of Rooster Cogburn. He deserved to win an Oscar for The Searchers IMO, but him winning for True Grit was a good outcome at the end of the day.

The girl, in the Coen Bros. adaptation, and the way the story is presented through her, is much, much truer to the book. Kim Darby, who played Mattie in the Wayne version, was in her early 20's when that film was made. Hailee Steinfeld was actually 14 (as the girl in the book is) when she appeared in the latest version.

I agree the Coen's stuck to the book more closely.

I thought the horse barter scene with Strother Martin in the original was down right hilarious. Strother Martin is one of my favorite classic actors.

Another funny scene is when John Wayne wakes up with a hangover and screams for coffee, the expression on his face and his cotton mouth are exactly how I've felt on many occasions.

Newer one is closer to the book and obviously Matt Damon is a slightly better actor then Glen Campbell who is painful to watch at times. Bridges was good but I thing Wayne was better in the role. Possibly because it play so much off his image. The shootout scene my be his most memorable five minutes of his career. "Fill your hand you SOB"
