I made the trip to TCU and it was well worth the travel time. The team played tough all weekend with a lot of grit even when they were down in Saturday's game. Travel baseball weekends are great and one of the best conference venues for visitors is TCU. Friday night's game was one I'll remember and so will Garrett Williams. The kid was great closing out the 9th and pitching the 10th. He came on with 1 out and the winning run on third. He got a K and F9 to go to extra innings.
I don't know if anyone has talked about it but the flu was running through our team over the weekend. Some of the pitchers gutted it out especially Friday night. I heard there were guys blowing chow in the dugout. It makes the weekend even more impressive. Also, Donnie Walton was puking all night and probably wouldn't have played today but for Arakawa's ankle. Tim twisted it going for a fly ball late in the game on Saturday. He had a slight limp today so I suspect he will be back soon. Donnie is just swinging from the right side of the plate still until he fully recovers from the surgery - it may just be a strength issue.
Dustin Williams was a beast this weekend. Good for him since he is from Weatherford, about 30 miles from TCU's campus. Dustin's dad actually does some radio work for TCU. Glad he's a Cowboy!
David Petrino had a good day in the field playing 3rd base. He made some difficult plays look fairly routine.
Expect Case back soon which will give Gage a rest. Gage caught three games in wet gear with the flu - one of my all time favorite Cowboys. The outfield was solid. We have a lot of depth and athleticism in the OF with Littell, Sluder, Costello and Corey Hassell (3/4 w 3 rbis today). Garrett McCain is an impressive freshman to be leading off. He's another athlete who can play multiple positions.
Traveling to an out of town series is fun and I would encourage it if you can make it. Only conference series left out of town are KU and TT. We also travel to Michigan in May.
It wouldn't be fair if I didn't mention Big Mike. He was almost perfect today. The kid is the epitome of determination and try. He apparently struggled as a high school pitcher and it wasn't until his 3rd year of JUCO ball that blossomed. I don't remember many meaningful innings last year until the B12 tournament when he started for us as after we ran out of pitching coming through the losers' bracket. We had guys warmed up in the bull pen in the late innings but Rob let him finish it out. Great for him and great for us.
Hope to see APR full of orange Tuesday night against the WSU Shockers. First pitch at 6:00. Big series against KSU this weekend also. First pitch Friday night at 7, Saturday at 3 and Sunday at 1. See you there.
