STILLWATER -- The last name -- Reeves -- is familiar.
So is the hometown: Gans, Oklahoma.
Trey Reeves is not his father -- 7-foot Bryant “Big Country” Reeves, perhaps the greatest player in Oklahoma State history. But they now share more than blood: The younger Reeves, like his father, is part of the OSU basketball family.
A 6-foot-4 forward, Trey Reeves has walked on to the Oklahoma State basketball team as a true freshman. The Muldrow High alumnus joined the team over the summer and is one of three walk-on players.
Cowboys coach Brad Underwood spoke in awe of Bryant Reeves after practice on Saturday.
To coach Reeves’ son, he said, is as enjoyable an experience as he has had.
“I could not enjoy a player, maybe my son (Tyler), any more than I do Trey,” Underwood said. “He’s always got a smile, he always says hello, coach. He’s the first one to shake your hand every day. And that young man gives everything that he possibly has.”
Underwood also spoke highly of the older Reeves, calling him an “incredibly warm and kind person.”
As both Oklahoma State’s coach and the coach of Reeves’ son, Underwood has embraced the opportunity to get to know Big Country.
“You could argue he’s the greatest player to ever play here, his dad,” Underwood said. “For me, having such a great appreciation of the history of this program, that’s a pretty special relationship for me to have with his dad and to get to know him. It’s fun. It’s been fun to know him on a personal side and get to know and hear the stories and all the successes.”
