I thought Gundy had a good response to the question concerning the team's focus on ISU considering the events of 2011. The questioner implied, and rightly so, that there will be a lot of discussion this week about that fateful Friday night.
Gundy said the team wasn't overlooking ISU in 2011 and that preparation that week had been good. The difference maker was the plane crash which was disclosed to the public and team that morning. He said there was no comparison between that year and this. None.
Also said he never put much stock in "revenge games" or "make-up games" from year to year. Every year and game is unique. Other than the location and timing of the game, there are no similarities in the games, he said.
There are obvious similarities, of course, records, time of year, "trap game" situation etc etc, but I think 2011 will always serve as a reminder of how easily a game can be lost because of lack of focus on game day, regardless the situation.
I seem to remember Gundy refusing to use that horrible event as an excuse for the loss, at the time, although I think most fans believed it had a huge effect on the the team. I know I did and do.
I don't foresee any repeat of 2011 this week.
