just caught a couple of q&a, but sounded like a deer in the headlights. Thoughts?

They'll have their dog and pony show but in the end nothing will be done. FB may pay some fines but there won't be any restrictions placed on FB. They will continue to "hoover" up data and sell it. They will also continue censoring political views they dislike while allowing views they agree with.

Not sure why this surprises anyone.....while it should be private, no chance it stays that way. My gosh you have people who say when they are going for lattes, posting pic while ON VACATION and so on.

Think Zuck is a tool though and certainly any group, party or person who can take advantage of the mining has and will continue to do so. Congress couldn’t straighten out a piece of rope.

Nobody should expect any privacy on social media even if you don't expose your profile publicly. These companies didn't become mega billion dollar publicly traded companies by giving everything away for free. The data we provide to them is how they all make their money.

As @Ostatedchi says, “If you aren’t paying for the product...you are the product they are selling.”

Data is the new oil.

But unlike oil, which has a tangible value due to ongoing demand, as data is socialized and gathered broadly by many sources, it's value diminishes.

So, how do companies relying on that revenue stream keep up the revenue? They have to mesh it with new data. Medical records would be a lucrative place to start for them.

Not necessarily. Better algorithms and computing power can continue to mine old data, and more data is gathered today than yesterday and that will continue.
