While watching the ORU game, the defensive limitations of our 3 seniors was very apparent. Seeing Keylan Boone and Avery Anderson play defense really highlighted the limitations of the seniors when it comes to moving laterally. It is no wonder that our defense was so poor last season, when we had to lean heavily on those 3. Hopefully MB recognizes this, and makes adjustments to his rotation as the season progresses. Right now, their lack of lateral mobility is a necessary evil, because their leadership, experience and ability to hit FT is needed.
I'm a Dz fan, because he has moxie and he tries to counter his limitations with hustle and hard work. But, his lack of athleticism really makes it easy on opposing offenses. He knows what he needs to do, but is just to slow on close outs and on moving laterally to close down driving lanes. If his 3s are not falling, he is probably hurting our cause. I do recognize that he is not afraid to mix it up on rebound opportunities and is probably a better rebounder than one would expect. When his shot is falling, he will help a lot. When it is not, I am hopeful that he is not shooting too often and that MB is leaning on other options.
Cam's limitations on defense really stood out last night. Prior to the ORU game, I would have thought he was an average defender, but he looked like he was wearing 15 pound shoes last night. He was one of the leading rebounders in the Big 12 last season, so that part of his game cannot be overlooked. As he showed last night, he can be counted on to make his free throws. If he is hitting shots, he is deserving of heavy minutes despite his limitations (0 for 6 was really uncharacteristic for him). I would feel a lot better about him playing a lot of minutes if those minutes were not coming with both Lindy and Dz on the floor at the same time.
Despite Lindy's turnovers last night, I think he is our best perimeter player. Of the 3, he is the best defender (but still below average). He can score in bunches, spread the floor with 3 point shooting, and will make his FT. He's a decent rebounder and ball handler. He, or Yor, should lead the team in minutes this season, and I am fine with that. I would just like to see more minutes with some of the freshmen, who are capable of making it tough on opposing defenders.
