I'm not sure what this show is aiming at. I thought it was going to be a parody of sorts on Star Trek type shows, but it's really not trying to be funny

It isn't?

The non-stop barrage of promos Fox has bombarded football fans with over the last three weeks was trying to sell it as a parody.

If that's not what it is, why would anyone watch more than one episode?

Watched the first episode. It wasn't horrible but like you I was confused is this a parody or straight up star trek. Kind of get the impression McFarlan sold it to fox as one thing and then delivered what he really wanted to make which was himself playing Kirk.

Strongest overall impression is it looked really expensive to make for what they got. Huge amount of CGI, sets, customs and makeup. Don't see it lasting long.

More like an irreverent Star Trek instead of a parody. It is good enough that I'll keep watching for now.

I watched an episode and it was better than I expected, which was nothing much. It's not something I'd set out to watch but I'd catch it again if it was on.

Some of the humor is funny but they have decided to go political which I do not think will work for them long term.

Last week was gay and transgender themed. This week it was the evils of religion.

I do find myself laughing at some of the one liners and cultural references. Avis was the name of the god the evil religious aliens worshiped and Scott Grimes got off some good quips.

BTW if it wasn't for Scott Grimes I don't think I'd watch it anymore he has the best lines.

Mixing humor and social commentary has worked for McFarlan for 16 years on Family Guy. That was also one of the intents of creating the original Star Trek series for Gen Roddenberry. For its time Star Trek was very political.

No doubt that MacFarlane is political but I think the main reason he's been successful is not the political message but that he pushes the humor right to edge of what he can get away with. Maybe he can continue to do that, the show has it's funny moments but I don't think it's a home run.

I think they need to push the edge more. It’s really feeling very tame. I’d like to see more controversy. The Avis thing was funny.
