Tonight the 2nd CFP rankings of this season will be released. I know that OSU will make a big jump from #14. The only question is how high will we rise. I think it could be argued that we should be as high as 2, but know we won't make it that high. Realistically, we should be in the 4-8 range.
In preparation for the OSU fan outrage, that I know we will all see at about 6:15 p.m., I want everyone to remember one word....Volatility.
The CFP is not the same as the AP poll and the Coaches poll. In those polls, for the most part, once a team is ranked in a particular position, they don't drop from that spot unless they lose (or if they drop, they only drop 1 slot). Therefore, the polls change very little from week to week except for big drops by teams that lose games.
The CFP is a very different animal. Theoretically, every ranking is independent of previous rankings. The committee is starting from scratch and comparing each of the teams resume's as of this moment. They are not going into tonight saying, "We can't move any team past Baylor, because they beat KSU on Thursday". They are more likely to say, "Well, BU beat KSU, but they didn't look the same without Russell, so we need to think about downgrading them".
My point is, if OSU is behind Notre Dame or Stanford, it does not mean that those teams have to lose a game for OSU to move past those teams as the season progresses. So, don't freak out when the rankings are released tonight. There will be some things that don't seem to make sense, but it really doesn't matter. What matters is that OSU beats ISU and then wins 2 tough home games. If it doesn't play out that way, OSU isn't going to finish in the top 4 and won't deserve to (IMO).
