I toured Ellis Island this past Thursday. Ellis Island has a great museum documenting the immigration in the early from 1890s to 1930s.
In that museum three things struck me.

1) the immigrants desperately wanted to come to America for a better life than their previous country offered. (That hasn’t changed)

2) Immigrants were required to have a skill and a means of support. Also, they had to be healthy. Many were sent back to their previous European port if they did not have acceltable means. (That has changed with illegal immigration acceptance).

3) There were a lot of historical documents about immigrants going through English classes and there was a new industry built just to teach new immigrants the American culture. Although immigrants certainly moved to geographic areas with immigrants from like countries, they also desired to assimilate to American society. (This is different from what many try to push).

By law, they must apply in the first country they go to after leaving their country.

They aren't refugees...they are interlopers.

It happens every year, literally. It is normal for those in grave situations to flee their countries of origin. It is up to those countries along the way to enforce their own laws, just like ours should be enforced correctly.
