"Good for Ramon"

And it turned out to be a blessing. I was at midfield, about 10 rows up, when Patrick Mahomes threw his final pass. It was intercepted by OSU’s Ramon Richards, who sped 59 yards down the sideline for a touchdown with six seconds left.

And it brought a smile to my face. Saturday morning, as we left the TownePlace Suites, also departing were a couple of women who obviously were Richards’ family. They were wearing OSU shirts, with Richards’ number and proclamations. They were friendly and excited and ready to get to the stadium. They were in vintage van.

I assumed they had driven from San Antonio; that’s where Richards is from. San Antone to Lubbock is a fair country piece of driving; 390 miles one way.

Richards hasn’t had the best of years. He was forced into a starting cornerback role last season as a freshman, played decent down the stretch, but went back to the bench this year as Ashton Lampkin returned from injury and Michael Hunter transferred in. But Saturday, Lampkin missed the game with injury and Kevin Peterson went down late third quarter. Richards played quite a bit. And at game’s end, he was in the right place at the right time, snagged an interception and had open range in front of him.

After the game, someone mentioned that it would have been cool if Richards had run out of bounds or taken a knee. Good act of sportsmanship, since OSU had a 10-point lead. But I thought of those two women who had driven from San Antonio to see their pride and joy, and how Richards was running toward the end zone where the OSU faithful was stationed. And I thought, run, Ramon, run.
