Americans abroad, particularly the young ones, seem to think that things work there like they do in the good ol' USA and everything's copacetic.
I remember being in Cancun about 25 yrs ago, with 5 of my buddies and we stopped what we were pretty certain was a kidnapping/rape scenario going down. Three drunk girls, likely around 17-18, were ready to jump in this van when the driver pulled up and told them it was a taxi and asked if they needed a ride. There no markings on the van and inside in the back were two guys trying to hunker down a bit. When we approached and starting asking questions, the driver took off like a bat out of hell. Stupid girls, were completely lacking in "situational awareness" and were so sloshed that they could have found themselves in big trouble.
Obviously, what happened to this kid was horrendous, but was he so ill-informed that he did not know that NK is a brutal regime that routinely tosses its own citizens in the gulag/work camps, and/or carries out the death penalty? Did he think he was going to be treated special? Feel horrible for his family regardless of the situation, I can't even (or don't want to) imagine.
