Anyone watched this yet? It's basically Steven Spielberg meets Stephen King. It's got obvious nods to ET, Poltergeist, Goonies, Carrie, and a bunch of other awesome 1980s pop culture stuff (Dungeons & Dragons plays a prominent role). It sounds derivative, and it is, but it's still done so well and so casually that it feels like a series of VHS tapes that were lost and just discovered after 30 years.

I can't recommend it highly enough. The kid actors are all great, the music is great, the opening title sequence of all things is note perfect. I'm not a horror fan at all, but this was fine for me. It was just freaky enough to provide tension without ever falling over into full-out, watch-between-your-fingers-you're-going-to-have-nightmares horror. It will obviously provide more of a nostalgia trip for those who lived through the 80s, or at least are familiar with 80s culture, but I'd recommend it to anyone.

I was on the fence, but I think you convinced me. I'll give it a try this weekend and report back.

Watched the first one last night. Interesting. Gonna have to put it on hold though because BoJack Horseman just released Season 3 today.

I won't lie... I thought you guys were crazy because I love some of the other Netflix originals and I wasn't impressed by the initial trailer.

But; WOW... Incredible. Easily in my top 3 of Netflix originals with the writing and awesome soundtrack. Can't wait for them to renew for season 2!

@shortbus what did you think?

Great show. Had hints of Goonies, ET, Alien, Twilight Zone, and Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

Just scary enough to keep adults engaged but not so much that kids would be turned away. Great acting by the kids.

Really glad you guys enjoyed it. It's always a risk to express your like of something on the internet; people normally can't wait to tell you how, actually, that thing sucks and how you must, therefore, be a moron.

2 episodes in. Hoping to knock out another couple this weekend. Very interesting so far. I haven't made up my mind whether or not I like it, but I'm drawn in and want to see more at this point.

I'm in the same boat. I started the 3rd episode (about 15 mins in) and feel like I am starting to get sucked in.

If someone reading this hasn't watch it, do it this week/weekend. Show of the summer IMO

Binge watched over two days, some potential spoilers ahead if you haven't watched it.

I had not realized how hobbit-sized Wynona Ryder was until I saw her dwarfed by everyone else on the show..... particularly stood out to me when she was in the yellow hazard suit. I also hadn't realized how old Matthew Modine was.... he's really showing it these days, had lines across his forehead so deep you could plant seeds.

Really liked the stringing up the christmas lights to coordinate with the wall of alphabet.

Kids actors all did well, I think the 12 yr old that played "11" may have a bright future in the entertainment industry. She could really display a lot of emotion (and do it well) while basically remaining nearly mute.

I was thinking Super 8 as well. My son picked up on the fact that during the last (mock) D & D games the kid played, that they asked Mike to tell more about the knight in the cave and other clues as to what is likely to come during the second season.

Agree on Millie who played 11. The Stranger Things accounted tweeted this video of her prepping for the role.

Excellent! It was inevitable with how popular the show has become, but it's great to see official confirmation.

Watched episode one last night. Worth the watch just to see someone grab a trapper keeper out of a locker. True to the times thus far. Good show.

The wife and I just finished binge watching this over 3 nights. Very well done as an homage to 80's pop culture and a fun TV show to watch.
