I'm more of a Clarke Quay guy with the lowlife beer drinkers.
Clarke is good. Boat Quay also. They have cleaned that area up much to the chagrin of guys like us. True Story - My office was in Orchard Tower - 12th floor. Four floors of whores seven days a week. The basement and first four floors were nothing but bars of all kinds.

That would be the Raffles Hotel on Beach Road and home to Somerset Maugham.
I am not familiar with the Raffles Hotel as it relates to Somerset Maugham. I discovered Maygham when I was 18 years old, read everything of his I could find. *The Razor’s Edge* had an enormously powerful influence on me, I was certain I was destined to grow up to be a real life Larry Darrell. What a great novel!

I spent 5 years in Saudi Arabia in the early 80s. I read everything by Maugham, Hemingway and Dos Passos I could get. My travels took me to Singapore from 95-99 where I often visited the Raffles Hotel with my Herald Tribune is hand on Sunday morning for the most expensive cup of coffee and pastry east of Paris. There was a tribute to Maugham in the courtyard at that time.

Speaking of hookers and whatnot.....Pattaya, Thailand was the craziest place have ever been. You being the world traveler, did you ever hit "The Beach" in KL?

When I worked in China, the hotel we stayed in had 7 floors; 1st floor was check-in and a 7-day a week disco, 2nd was hookers and massages with happy endings, 3rd was massages no happy endings (could get a 2-hour full body massage for $7 America), 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th were normal hotel rooms. roof was were they did our laundry and scrubbed our cloths on the tile......cloths didn't last long.

The disco had cubicles that amazingly hot chinese girls would dance on all night. They had halter tops, tight shorts and go-go boots and every single one of them would knock a buzzard off a gut wagon. Tsingtao was cheap and filled with all the formaldehyde you wanted. Crazy times.

I have been to KL many times but don't recall the Beach. I have spent a good bit of time in Kuantan (east coast Malaysia). Some China trips but I was in upper management by then and didn't get the "quality" time of my youth. Beijing and Zhanjiang mostly. Howard Johnson (HoJo) was the "hot spot" as I recall. I spent a lot of time in Thailand (oil & gas pipelines) in the Pattaya/Sattahip/Rayong area. It's been 4 years but now that I am married we spend more time in Ko Samui (family atmosphere) than the old trails of yesterday.

sounds like you spent a lot of time in Thailand in the oil and gas business. I worked for the railroad specializing in laying thai's ties.

I was involved in the front end project development of the Yadana gas pipeline from Myanmar to Ratchburi. About 500 miles total of large diameter gas line. Once we had it under contract I was only a visitor to the project sites with our clients, Japanese pipe mills and Petro Authority of Thailand (PTT). I was heavily involved with Gazprom in the Nord Stream Project in the Baltic Sea also.
