Season 6 teaser for some little HBO show

Wicked Game? That wasn't Isaak, was it?

Ok, before we start, are we throwing away the books this year, or do I have to know about all the differences between HBO and Martin? I'm trying to reduce the stress in my life.

James Vincent McMorrow. I had to shazzam it.

Yeah books are out the window this year IMO. Only a few scenes left in the book that we haven't hit in the show yet.

Oh s^$% that was tight. Come on April!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't wait for my blue ray set to come in next week and re watch season 5.

Thanks for that. I'd seen a couple of discussions this morning which weren't nearly as good. I'm just ready to see the return of a never-disappointing series.
Reading that list of comments after the spoilers just makes your head spin.

Must..resist...

This is the first season I'm actually looking forward to watching not knowing WTF is going to happen.

I know what you mean. I would so much prefer to read the books before seeing the upcoming season, but it would be impossible to do that and stay away from spoilers, so I have given up on that option.

I will say, that after reading the breakdown that I linked, I am becoming increasingly more convinced that the final 2 books are going to be very different from what HBO shows us. I am becoming more and more convinced that HBO only knows a little bit about what GRRM's plot for the final 2 books, and HBO is making it up from here on out. Some of the characters may end up in the same place/situation, but the roads that take them there are going to be hugely divergent.

Three examples, that were revealed last season by HBO.

-HBO's Brienne is outside the walls of Winterfell. GRRM's Brienne is somewhere in the Riverlands with Jaime and Lady Stoneheart

-GRRM's Davos is on his way to Skaagos to look for Rickon. HBO's Davos is at the Wall with the deceased (?) Jon Snow and Melisandre.

-If I remember correctly, HBO's Jaime is on a boat with the deceased Myrcella. GRRM's Myrcella is still alive and in Dorne. Jaime is in the Riverlands.

I agree and hope that is the case at this point. Double the enjoyment if the stories diverge. There's no way GRRM is going to have his books come out with everyone knowing 90% of what is going to happen in them.

I would be perfectly fine if the two take completely separate paths in fact.

Don't you have your 2nd point reversed? I'm still a book and a half short of re-reading and remembering all this stuff.

And honestly, I don't care what HBO does with their stories. It'll be awesome in its own way, but GRRM's storyline will always be the official one for me. For all I know, HBO will put Dany on the iron throne by the end of season 8, while GRRM could very well have the Walkers drive the rest of the living into the sea off Dorne when he finishes.

Don't even get me started on him filling in the rest of the 100 years leading up to Robert's Rebellion either.....

Yes. Good catch. I will fix it.

Totally agree on the rest of your post. I, also, suspect that Martin will make some key changes that diverge significantly from the outline that he originally gave to HBO. That might have happened anyway, since he gave the info to HBO about a decade ago. But, he almost has to do it now that HBO is beating him to the punch.

Martin wouldn't dream of finishing his story the same as HBO does, plus, I imagine Martin's editor and publishers would insist on his tale being significantly different than what HBO comes up with. Cuz, when he finally gets them written, if you experts say the books pretty much follow HBO's line of thinking, I ain't buyin' 'em.

Are Martin and HBO still collaborating on the series? If so, and I were him, I'd be whispering a lot of sweet BS in their ears to keep them away from how I intended to wrap things up.

I know he declined to direct a Season 6 Episode so he could have more time to work on Book 6. Of course, even if he directs a future episode, he can use that opportunity to take their story even further from his.

I would guess HBO and their writers have big enough egos that that they feel they can end it however they want now, I doubt they are too worried about matching up to GRRM, and I doubt GRRM is too worried about throwing them off the trail. I think they've all earned the right to do what they want with their separate creations.

My understanding is he's given the show runners an outline as well as the ultimate ending. I would be shocked if both the books and show didn't get to the same place. I expect them to take increasingly different roads to get there. As has been discussed before the books simply have too many characters and two many concurrent storylines to fit into a TV series. Unlike Martin who can simply bench major characters for an entire book the show is character and star driven. You only have so many minutes in a season and so much budget.

How often does a tv show/movie finish up before the books?

I can never think of a situation like this before. Normally the books are source material and the movie / TV series is adapted from them after they are published. I know the Harry Potter movies started before the last books were published but the movies were always adapted afterward. I don't know of any TV series that was every based on a series of books and caught up with them. We're in uncharted territory.

The Walking Dead could potentially do it. They are chugging along.

Coin flip at best that GRRM ever finishes the book series.
