Yes, known in the show as the Night's King. But not really the Night's King as described in the books. In that final scene...was that Bran face to face with the leader of The Others?

Reading that list of comments after the spoilers just makes your head spin. Thanks for that. I'd seen a couple of discussions this morning which weren't nearly as good. I'm just ready to see the return of a never-disappointing series.
Must..resist...
This is the first season I'm actually looking forward to watching not knowing WTF is going to happen.
I know what you mean. I would so much prefer to read the books before seeing the upcoming season, but it would be impossible to do that and stay away from spoilers, so I have given up on that option.
I will say, that after reading the breakdown that I linked, I am becoming increasingly more convinced that the final 2 books are going to be very different from what HBO shows us. I am becoming more and more convinced that HBO only knows a little bit about what GRRM's plot for the final 2 books, and HBO is making it up from here on out. Some of the characters may end up in the same place/situation, but the roads that take them there are going to be hugely divergent.
Three examples, that were revealed last season by HBO.
-HBO's Brienne is outside the walls of Winterfell. GRRM's Brienne is somewhere in the Riverlands with Jaime and Lady Stoneheart
-HBO's Davos is on his way to Skaagos to look for Rickon. GRRM's Davos is at the Wall with the deceased (?) Jon Snow and Melisandre.
-If I remember correctly, HBO's Jaime is on a boat with the deceased Myrcella. GRRM's Myrcella is still alive and in Dorne. Jaime is in the Riverlands.
Don't you have your 2nd point reversed? I'm still a book and a half short of re-reading and remembering all this stuff.I know what you mean. And honestly, I don't care what HBO does with their stories. It'll be awesome in its own way, but GRRM's storyline will always be the official one for me. For all I know, HBO will put Dany on the iron throne by the end of season 8, while GRRM could very well have the Walkers drive the rest of the living into the sea off Dorne when he finishes.
Don't even get me started on him filling in the rest of the 100 years leading up to Robert's Rebellion either.....
Martin wouldn't dream of finishing his story the same as HBO does, plus, I imagine Martin's editor and publishers would insist on his tale being significantly different than what HBO comes up with. Cuz, when he finally gets them written, if you experts say the books pretty much follow HBO's line of thinking, I ain't buyin' 'em.
Are Martin and HBO still collaborating on the series? If so, and I were him, I'd be whispering a lot of sweet BS in their ears to keep them away from how I intended to wrap things up.
How often does a tv show/movie finish up before the books?
