Running game question for Indy...or anyone else

That wants to take a stab. What are we trying to accomplish in the running game and why? I know the average fan watching notices two plays: a run up the middle or a sweep to the outside. But their are many variations: ISO, Power, Counter, Zone, Zone read, and things like jet sweep etc.

What are we trying to do? What do we run? I am assuming the constant attack of the middle is because we don't have a running back that is fast enough to get the edge. But still, why not more misdirection with the use of Cowboy backs? I am just confused as to what our philosophy is.
