On Wednesday, President Obama added another prestigious medal to his Nobel Prize collection when he had Defense Secretary Ash Carter award him with the Department of Defense Medal for Distinguished Public Service.
Secretary Carter awarded his boss with the medal on January 4 during the Armed Forces Full Honor Farewell Review for the President held at Conmy Hall, Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall in Virginia.

After spending the last few weeks throwing roadblocks in the path of President-elect Donald Trump and his transition team, Obama nonetheless claimed in his remarks to the members of the military in attendance that “We’ve got to make sure that during this transition period that there is a seamless passing of the baton, that there’s continuity.”

Along with the AP, CBS News White House correspondent Mark Knoller also marked the ceremony with a Tweet to his followers.

Many commenters on Knoller’s Twitter feed were incredulous at the award. Some likened the award to a much maligned “participation medal” and others were skeptical of Obama’s underling giving his own boss a medal.

@markknoller he gets awards for nothing all the time. Remember that Nobel Peace Prize?

to be fair, both Bushes got it as well, can see the elder for his service in WWII. The son, just don't see it unless the incoming president awards it to you/him. To have a person in your own cabinet award this to you BEFORE leaving office seems sorta self serving.

What an egotistical, narcissistic fool this guy is, I laughed out loud when I read this yesterday. Award yourself a medal.

What's next? Is he going to replace the slave owner Thomas Jefferson's statue with one of himself and rename the memorial?

There's a trash dump somewhere nearby which would be fitting for a memorial to him.

JD, can see Bush the elder receiving it, but the other three come on! Guess my rub is that he is receiving from someone in his own administration.....

I guess my rub is I didn't see any whining about this when other Presidents received it undeservingly as well, and now seeing the meaningless distinction of who gave them the meaningless, undeserved medal being the huge bone of contention when it's pointed out that others did essentially the same thing.

Perhaps it's because none of us were aware of it happening and there wasn't as much, if any, publicity about the award, or both.

Personally, I was aghast that GWB never used his veto pen the first 6 years in office and said so many times all the while he was spending like a drunken sailor.

Many on here have skewered the GOP repeatedly about their actions or inactions these past 8 years.

Which would lead me to question why you weren't aware of it and/or why there wasn't as much publicity about an undeserved meaningless award.

IMO, you guys are making a mountain out of a molehill.....a molehill that has been there during the past three administrations as well.

By all means, proceed....that's what the internet is for, I guess.

I think we should end this ridiculous discussion with the fact that I received the Navy Good Conduct Medal!:D
I think they gave these to all of us even those who spent significant time in Unit 40/50.

JD, I actually have never liked it for any of them Can see no issues with people like Kissinger, Albright, etc though), especially when one of their own appointees hands it out, and when its given to them as the WH is being packed up (Clinton, Bush etc) so they can make room for the next president. Just seems hollow and like a last minute self-aggrandizing move. Wasn't on here when Clinton got his in 2001 and don't remember what the board was like in 2009 when Bush got his either....had it popped up would have roundly criticized it then as well.

I'll say the exact same thing if Trump has his DOD appointee give him one in January of 2025.

Like I said....by all means proceed.

But color me dubious.

JD, what color is dubious . Promise if Trump does this I will rail again at how utterly hollow it is. My email is mbezinque@cox.net stash it away for just such a day, I won't disappoint.

By all means....proceed.

But I'm already seeing a lot of parsing of words Trump said during the election for arguing what he really meant.

Next up is....Mexico is going to pay for the wall.

Watch how this goes.

Btw, dubious is a fine, deep shade of skeptical.

I'm not a guy who gives a crap who pays for the wall. I just want one built. I'll personally donate to the cause.

See?

He's already getting a pass.

Somebody build the damn wall. We will all jointly call him a liar if he doesn't and if Mexico doesn't pay for it.

(There is no way Mexico is going to directly pay for the wall. Does anybody believe otherwise? If so, how's that gonna happen?)

From me? On not making Mexico pay for the wall? That was never a rallying point for me. Actually building a barrier and enforcing immigration laws was though. What's a couple tens of billions of dollars in the grand scheme of the US government expenditures? It's a sound investment, much more so than the $43 million we spent building a CNG gas station in Afghanistan and what not.

I thought it was well established by now that the cost was going to be taken from the aid we give to Mexico, tariffs, taxes and other voodoo economics. Not sure it was ever stated nor implied that an invoice was going to be mailed to Mexico City. Maybe I'm giving him a pass by not expecting that was how it would happen, but I don't think so.

"Mexico must pay for the wall and, until they do, the United States will, among other things: impound all remittance payments derived from illegal wages; increase fees on all temporary visas issued to Mexican CEOs and diplomats (and if necessary cancel them); increase fees on all border crossing cards of which we issue about 1 million to Mexican nationals each year (a major source of visa overstays); increase fees on all NAFTA worker visas from Mexico (another major source of overstays); and increase fees at ports of entry to the United States from Mexico [Tariffs and foreign aid cuts are also options]. We will not be taken advantage of anymore."

Later for that though.....

Also, are we ever going to see his tax returns?

What I'm seeing, IMO, is similar behavior as the Obamaniacs throughout his administration...I guess we will see if it continues....how long it takes you guys to get fed up.

I was thinking it would be a tax on money wired to Mexico. Sort of an indirect way of Mexico paying for it. Then he proclaims victory and moves on. We will see.

If they want money from Mexico to pay for the fence (albeit indirectly), why not sell all the drugs confiscated and stored in those massive warehouses to marijuana distributors in CO, WA, CA, etc. and use those proceeds to pay for the wall?

Mexican weed is not good weed. Nobody is going to buy it in legal states. But, maybe we could sell it in the Middle East. Make mad money, chill out the psycho Muslims. It's a win.

Don't know--don't partake. From those I know who do, their biggest complaint is the cost of designer pot. Several have said they would take less potent pot for a cost reduction. Just from the amounts confiscated there seems to be a market somewhere for it. Maybe just for the time it takes to fund/build a wall.

Oh I don't any more. Years ago in the college days though. Designer pot is much more expensive for a reason though. The potency is much much higher. Back in the day we smoked the always available Mexican brick weed often. It's just what was readily available. You could probably get through a quarter ounce a day if you wanted. I had the opportunity to sample some stuff from Amsterdam. Holy crap. That experience was in a league of its own. If I had smoked any more than the little bit I did I'd probably still be high today.

We could also get our hands on some expensive stuff grown in the Idabel area that was insane compared to the leaf, seed, and stem heavy Mexican crap. We called it helmet weed because it left you feeling lime you had a Rick Moranis sized helmet on your head.

They should sell that stuff someplace though. I'm saying rip off the terrorists.

Yes you're giving him a pass. Mexico was going to make a 10% down payment so we could buy the materials, then we'd build the wall and send them a billion dollar invoice that they could pay with all major credit cards or PayPal (we don't accept bitcoin). I think there was even a mention of 1% 10, net 30 day terms discount. I've heard the Democrats may filibuster the 1% early pay discount.
