Which is something I find very disturbing. But it leaves you to wonder: when is the last time Joe Biden read a book? Do you suppose Kamala Harris has cracked open a book in the last ten years? I would be surprised to learn that she has. I don’t think we’ve had a particularly well read president since Ronald Reagan. And our country has been in a slow downward spiral ever since. Do you suppose there is a connection there?

I think he's trolling again.

It's what he does.
He's the worlds best at it.

Visit a Presidential Library and have a look at their daily schedule. The Clinton Library in Little Rock and the Bush Library in College Station are worth a visit.

These guys are so busy, I can’t believe they even have time to go to the bathroom and tweet.

Yeah, I haven't read a book in years. I read and write all day long for work and not gonna keep reading more in the evening. Plus, spending time with family.
Can't imagine that the President would have time.
I never read much except John Grishams stuff until I retired.
Now I read everything I can get my hands on.
You'll do just about anything to kill 16 hours of daily free time.
Retirement isn't the be all to end all BTW.
Besides, I didn't think I'd live this long.

Good point. I have so little time. Any free time I get I play golf.

Politicians should be readers, avid readers of philosophy, economics and history, if nothing else. A well read politician develops a foundation of principles that become the bedrock of his political
Intentions. It allows him to argue persuasively what his intentions are, and show the people that he has thought through his policies.

A poorly read politician, and IMO a disgusting braggart that enthuses he doesn’t read, tends to rule on the basis of sound bites that have a shallow appeal to emotion. There is no there there, it’s just a mishmash of unconnected feelings, with no known foundation. It wanders all over the map, seeking to gain approval of polls. It’s a really dangerous way to run a government. That’s what I think when I think of DJT. I don’t consider my opinion to be trolling.

Biden and Harris are idiots from a different plane. Trump at least has his “gut” to tell him what to do. Those two have nothing. They are blank slates, balls in a pinball game, getting whacked from one position to another, with no understanding of what they are advocating, just doing and saying what they are told to do and say by unknown voices hidden from our view.

As for me I would rather have a leader that I disagreed with but who could articulate what he was attempting to do, based on a well thought out and formulated plan of action that has a strong philosophical foundation, than one who flits from scandal to scandal in a game of political team rivalry. And that kind of leader cannot exist if he refuses to read.

My opinion; food for thought.

What a bunch of pretentious crap. Only the well read should be in high office.

Most busy people read continuously. Just not the political correct "intellectual" books you think make some superior to the unwashed.

They read proposals, contracts, estimates, briefings, correspondence, spreadsheets, finacial statements.

They read hard news, sports news, finacial news, political news, satire.

Yet to you these people are uneducated and not intellectually curious.

Hell if I was as rich as Trump is or President I'd have an army of people who would find the answer to everything I wanted to know or had to know to do my job.

I would not speak to their education in the institutional sense, but I do believe they are poorly self-educated, and I also believe not a single one of them is intellectually curious. I’ll speak to Trump because he currently resides in power. I doubt he has read a single issue paper presented to him from beginning to end. I get the feeling he insists on Cliff Notes and barely has patience for those. I imagine the same could be said for Kamala Harris. I doubt she has the intelligence to understand anything but the most fundamental talking points presented to her. The same could be said about Joe Biden at his greatest intellectual development, but today I doubt he can follow anything that’s not on a teleprompter. I don’t regard this as the least bit pretentious. I think it is one of the things that is causing America’s decline, and if it isn’t talked about it can’t be corrected.

Ask yourself this: do you think DJT or Kamala Harris or Joe Biden could tell you what is the 7th Amendment? It would shock me if they could. No, I don’t think any of them have the slightest intellectual curiosity.

I’m not sorry if that offends you.

Eh, it goes to free will, self determination.
If one chooses not to read books, who among us is in any position to be judgemental.

I am judgemental to the extent that politicians today have no philosophical foundation on which to lay their policies. It’s all emotional balleyhoo designed to keep their base in line and to generate more hatred between groups.

I disagree that politicians are too busy to keep themselves informed. They have the time, they just don’t do it. As Al Pacino said in Scent of a Woman they don’t do it because “it’s too damned hard.” Politicians are a wicked bunch of human beings.

What a bunch of pretentious crap. Been practicing law for over a quarter century and have had ZERO time to read anything other than legal publications. Any president who has time to read the tripe that jerk off think-tankers put out Is probably not paying enough attention to his actual job.
It should be noted that Trump retires about 1 or 2 AM. Is up and in the Oval at 6.
That leaves little time for Charlotte Bronte.

And yet you have plenty of time to participate on this board on a regular basis. But that’s beside the point. You’re no politician. Whether you have a philosophical foundation for your utterances on this board is if no concern. Your utterances can’t harm anyone.

I would prefer James Madison or Thomas Paine (I’m currently reading The Rights of Man. Would that Trump or Biden or Harris would do the same!). Trump is up until late at night watching FoxNews, he regularly says so. He could spend 15 minutes ignoring his “gut” instincts and learning a little about the history and philosophical foundation of the country he leads. We would all be the better for it.

Same here except only 16 years. I'll read many contracts, reports, legal analysis and deal studies. But not novels. News articles, yes. I guess if I was prez I would read intelligence, economic, and similar briefings.

I see absolutely no reason why reading crime novels, sci-fi, romance novels or biographies will help anyone set policy. Bunch of crap. Yes, knowing history is important, but otherwise you hire people to give you the information to make decisions.

Newsflash. I don’t give a flying act of coitus about Trump’s “philosophical foundation”.

Additional news flash. I don’t hate leftists because any politician has sown the hatred. I hate leftists because they’re a bunch of low life marxist anti-American cocksuckers.

If you truly believe what you wrote - truly believe it! - you should have no problem if Joe Biden wins the election. Every single decision he makes will come from people he hires to make his decisions.

Philosophy majors are nearly my last choice to lead a nation.

Don't be stupid. Look no further than Biden's vp selection or Trump's nominee yesterday. Plenty of reason to see why the hiring matters greatly.

And yet many of DJT’s policies are at least as socialist as the Democrats. I posted a link a few days ago outlining Trump’s socialist policies. Had you read it you might have a better understanding of the man you support.

Your comment is a perfect example of what I have been saying. You have been willingly manipulated into hating “the left” so much you will support anyone who says he will protect you from them. Even if some of his policies are as “leftist” as the left’s.

What is stupid about what I wrote? You say hiring is important, those hired will tell the president what to do. Biden will utilize hired guns for every single decision. He will be following your preference.

Hated the left long before Trump, Sporto. Probably when I first learned about hippies burning flags, calling cops “pigs,” and calling US troops “Baby-killers”.

From a competitive perspective a lot of books are a huge waste of time

Trump is not a marxist. Nor is he a socialist. I knew this when I read Art of the Deal during intercession in college.
And yet some of his policies are as socialist as those advocated by Democrats. Do you approve of those policies?

“socialism has come to mean an expansive economic role for the government via federal spending on the one hand, and industry mandates and regulations on the other. By this definition, Cato Institute's Scott Lincicome tells me, both candidates are socialists, just different versions.“

This is not the definition of socialism that I learned in middle school, high school, college, or law school. Again, an “institute” populated by the never-had-a-real-job crowd, redefining terms to fit their premise. Now, please show me how Trump is more of a marxist than the democrooks and all the other shytbags out in the street breaking windows and setting fires.

In the first place I never called Trump a Marxist, and never said he is more socialist than Democrats. The link points out that some of Trump’s policies could come straight from the Democrat playbook, the playbook you and others regard as socialist.

The link specifically says neither Trump nor Biden are socialists from the textbook definition, but that the definition has morphed into a different perspective. Our friend, Pilt, for example, a self identified socialist, insists that Norway is a socialist country. And yet Norway fits more closely the definition proffered by the link than the textbook definition.

Lastly I would posit the people in the institutes you do disparage as having never had real jobs would qualify as having real jobs every bit as much as someone who has practiced law. One thing I learned long ago in debate is when your opponent resorts to trashing the character those that disagree with him, rather than argue the merits of his own position, you have won the debate. It was true then, it was true when I was a debate judge as an adult, and it remains true today. I’m surprised a lawyer with 25 years’ experience wouldn’t know that. At any rate I perceive all I have done is make you mad, which has never been my intent. So I’m going to drop off now. I have a busy, busy day tomorrow, I’m going to bed.

P.S. Yes, JD, I know: PA .... AF!
