Red Dead Redemption II

I digitally bought it last night haven't played it yet. Looking forward to it. But I also haven't played a video game for at least 2 years maybe more. My brother moved to Alaska and gave me his ps4. So I kept seeing all the hype for the game and bought it.

That's up next for me. Still playing through AC Odyssey right now. It's great. The map is huge.

Did you play the first one?

The first one was great for the gameplay and storyline. Had the best story twist I have ever seen in a game.

The guy you rescue at the beginning of rhis game was the character you played in the first game.

I played Red Dead Revolver way back in 2004 on Xbox. It was one of my favorite games back then. I never played Red Dead Redemption, was more into the Fallout series at that time and was so far into that I didn’t have much time for anything else.

But I have RD2 on download right now, it takes a bit with my internet out here in the sticks. That’s a big damn game, 92 GB total, and I bought the big bundle so I have two download the other two parts as well. Should be done tonite lol. That is, unless the hamster dies in my router...

I started it this weekend. Only a couple hours in but it is amazing. Honestly, at this point in my life the hours you have to sink into a game like this feels demoralizing. But I'm gonna do it... It will just take me two years.

Thurman, are you an old gamer like me? I’ll be 45 tomorrow, I remember the days of Atari 2600, when it was awesome playing “Raiders Of the Lost Ark” and trying to avoid the slithering snake of blocks...

Games these days are really amazing when you have been witness to the development of video games over the course of 40 years. I question how much longer I’ll be into video games...then something comes out like RD2 of one of the Fallout games and I’m instantly 10 again..

I'm 35 so I don't go back to Atari but I had the same thought as I played RD2. I remember when Mario 3 on NES blew my mind.

I have only played a couple of hours so far. I have finished Chapter 1 and am doing the random quests in and around Valentine. I really like how they have connected the story. Great graphics. Great sound.

Just finished sinking a month into Horizon: Zero Dawn. Giving myself a few week break then will get this. Been looking forward to this one for a long time. RDR1 was so well done for its time.

When you think of GTA 5, horizon, RDR2... it feels like developers are just now getting to the point where they can actually accomplish what they dreamed about 20 years ago. I remember when GTA 3 came out and they were talking about how they wanted to make a city that actually feels like it is alive and spontaneous. GTA5 was the first that really felt like they were getting to that point.

I'm only 3 or 4 hours into RD2 and I've never played an open world game that feels this alive and spontaneous. Frankly it is a tad overwhelming.

I finally got this thing downloaded late last night...yeah I know, my internet SUCKS. But I can either have 25 acres or good internet, can’t have both out here...

Damn this is a big game. I’m still just getting started, just meandering around and figuring it all out. My character isn’t stout enough yet really. I went to get deer to feed the people, messed around and tried to kill a bear and got hammered. Asshole keeps falling off the damn horse lol. I tried jumping back towards the creek and it’s funny how real they made all this. The physics...sliding down icy and snow hills...things you wouldn’t have dealt with in Skyrim with the horses and snowy places.

Fending off those wolves with a double barrel was fun too. I assumed things would be pretty linear until I “leveled up” a bit, but I guess not. More sandbox than I had realized. My gaming prowess has declined since 2015 and Fallout 4s introduction. In fact, I haven’t played anything else since the last DLC of FO4.

I’ll have a better account once I get the rust off my controller and get my head screwed on strait.

I still can’t believe I’m still playing with controllers....ever since 1979....

Anytime I start a game like this I feel like such an old man. "I just want to punch things and shoot stuff. Why do I have to upgrade my camp?" Two weeks later I'm obsessively upgrading every little thing.

I keep accidentally pulling my gun out on people and sending the town into a frenzy. Last night I was trying to say hi to an old lady and ended up blasting her off of her front porch.
Guilty of this and it keeps screwing me in missions lol

Glad I'm not the only one. I do this every 10 minutes.

I'm having to do a lot of googling to get the basics of the camp down. Also, maybe it is just me but the mini-map is impossible for me to see well.

You can enlarge that map any time you want, on PS4 I think it is ↓ on the dpad. And yeah, I need to do some research on the camp supplies and such. I have done some hunting and brought several deer/boars back and haven't noticed a change. Same with adding money, have donated like $250...

You can spend the money you donate to the camp from the ledger and upgrade various things via the ledger. FYI, DON'T buy a boat because you get one eventually.

That little issue with pulling the gun...glad it isn’t just me. Every time I go hunting, I end up seeing a deer and scaring off all the game because I didn’t get my bow off the horse. So I pull the pistol and blast the f^#} away.

The controls aren’t all that intuitive for me just yet. And about money...look up the gold bar glitch in the little town of Limpany near the base camp by Valentine. You can end up with about 30 gold bars, $500 a piece. There’s a certain set of steps you have to do, so don’t go into the Sheriffs office in the burned out town of Limpany until you have tried it and done the steps correctly. I would do it soon, Rockstar will probably send out an update patch soon

I shot three deer and finally got my food supplies up for the camp, but the other supplies I haven’t been able to put together just yet. Seems like there’s more assholes running around on the roads now, and they seem to like to lip off and get me to fighting too much. Kill one asshole, then another comes along to “wittiness”. It’s like the movie Casino, after awhile you have 4-5 bodies to deal with...

I forgot I had my rifle out in town, two assholes got all itchy with the trigger and I had to kill them, then was wanted, had to high tail it to the post office to pay off the damned bounty.

And just remember...once you kill some NPC asshole, they are gone forever. So keep that in mind because I’d be willling to bet you can “fail” a mission if you wander into some place and kill some idiot too quickly.

Did I mention this is a big game? That map is pretty big, haven’t uncovered it all just yet, it’s like other Rockstar games and Fallout as well, you don’t see everything until you are either told about a place or you venture into it and discover it. And I think you need to be leveled up to get into some areas.

Do you have to actually take the deer body to camp to get the benefits of the meat or do you get the meat when you skin the deer in the wild? I really don't want to spend time hauling deer carcass to and from camp.

I had to throw away my bow when i found an upgraded shotty at the o'driscoll compound. No idea why it forced me to swap. Game is easy to find in the right places, so i dont bother with the bow anymore

Only problem with that ^, is that you can't sell the pelts for a very good price if they've got bullet holes all in them.

I got that shotty as well, had to trade my repeater. I ended up killing some asshole and taking his repeater in a fight so it’s all good.

My character is a prick now. In town, people cuss me and call me names. I have whipped some serious asses...

Is there any hope of “fast travel” like in Skyrim and even some of the other rockstar games? All this horseshit is getting old...

My tip about the treasure map in the sheriffs office was a dud. That’s only if you had the preordered edition. I missed that deadline. There’s about 40 gold bars with that little trick i mentioned though. You can carry 30, sell them once you have the Fence set up, or use donate them to the camp. My camp is rocking now, I just spend a little cash here and there and restock. Everything is maxed out on the wagons and whatnot. Still haven’t done much crafting. I can’t wait to unlock some of the better weapons. I want that broom handle gun, even the pistol that looks like a Borchardt semi auto. I’m guessing Lancaster is game speak for Winchester, I want to get the Henry rifle. It’s funny how hopped up the Volcano pistol is, it’s the one gun that’s accurately named, I suppose since the company is gone and the design is long obsolete (by the way, Benjamin Henry used the Volcano to design the Henry rifle lol).

It’s kinda cool having most of these guns in real life in my collection...I don’t have a Borchardt, and I used to have a broom handle pistol, but sold it because it was broken and I wanted a better example (in real life...). But all the others in the game, I have some example of...it looks like they are calling a Krag rifle a Springfield. They have another Springfield that appears to be a 1903. If the game is set in 1899...that wouldn’t exactly fly...but the Krag was the issued Army rifle from 1892-93 until 1902. I put a scope on the Trapdoor Springfield, which is funny to me...that would be quite impossible with the mechanism, and the Buffington sight would have been cool with the ladder action.

Wonder if you can get a Gatling gun at some point? Or a nice Mauser rifle? Or a revolver rifle? These are things that occupy my thoughts as I play...

So there is some form of fast travel, albeit a bit limited...

I suck at hunting. I tried to take out a bear with my basic repeater. He ate me.

You can fast travel with stage coaches, train rides, and the map you get at your camp when you upgrade.

Crazy thing happened...I interrupted a train robbery by some of the O’Ddiscolls. I killed them right after they executed the trainmen and passengers. So the trrain was just sitting there. I ended up being able to take if for a spin around the map lol. I would stop, hunt, throw the carcasses or skins on the train, and go back to camp. So I had a ton of meat and parts all at once since I was able to get the train close to my camp, just a horse ride away in Rhodes.

Anybody else pick up on the politics of this game? It’s pretty...liberal. I’ll say that. The one thing I’m a bit disgusted with about it.

Game pissed me off. I kill the legendary bear without issue and have his pelt on my horse. I ride to the trapper, won't let me make the bear hat, so I ride to camp. In route I help a lady fallen under a horse. Ride back to camp, pelt is gone. Annoyed. Somewhere in between the trapper and camp it just "fell off"?

The hunting thing is kind of annoying I read online your pelts can actually get damaged and deteriorate if you leave them on your horse for long.

I just was trotting back and it was just gone .it's super dumb and made me not want to play the rest of the weekend.

Has anyone crafted anything yet? Since pelts can go bad do you have to go hunt everything you need for a certain upgrade at once?
