Punk rock turns 40 this year, if you go by Theresa Kereakes' definition.

As a teenager, she lived behind, and worked at, the Whisky-A-Go-Go in Los Angeles in the mid to late 1970s, and took photos of every act that came through the club. She was also just involved in the whole LA punk scene, going to shows all around the area. She photographed about all of it, and thus has a tremendous archive of the artists from that era. Years ago, she started a blog and said "The Ramones first played Los Angeles up the street at the Roxy in August of 1976. That, to me, heralded the birth of punk rock in Los Angeles."

I'd say she's as good a source as any on the birth and lifetime of punk, especially on the west coast version...and much better than the many from that era who are no longer with us.
