Wife wants to go see our oldest, whom is in Portland Oregon. Looking at driving it, will have the 11yr old and mother in law. Does anybody have any helpful suggestions, or things to avoid in the Pacific Northwest in July

Paging davidallen, local resident and Cowboy tour guide.

Great city, beautiful state. Hood River is a great little town to the east, with a nice drive including Multnomah Falls.

Yeti = avoid.

Yeti is Russian so yes avoid it but in Oregon they have Bigfoot a very simple hominid who loves humans. Have you never seen Harry and the Hendersons.

Where are you driving in from? If you could hit the red wood forest in CA up I would do that. I still have memories of going through there as a kid on the way to Oregon. I love Oregon it is a very pretty place so enjoy!

Thanks for all the info. some good info, keep it coming. It looks like you can't pump your own gas in Oregon. Portland has a lot of Micro brewery's . No sales tax, but looks to have a (14% hotel tax) Gresham and east Portland is a little rougher than west Portland/Tigard/Beaverton area.. I hear the drive down the Columbia river is very scenic which I am pretty sure PCH 101 is also

Ms. J is coming home from Portland tomorrow night, having spent the week there with her son. I'll see what she has to say, and post it on Monday.

I've driven out there the past 2 summers. Went 2 years ago with my parents and took my wife's family last year. 84 down the Columbia River is really pretty. Stop at Multnomah falls. Don't fall in like my mom did, will embarrass the hell out of everyone. My cousin from Houston moved up there a few years ago and has opened a chain of restaurants called Fire on the Mountain. Go check out the Fremont st location, you won't be sorry. She's got a brewery in that store. Food is awesome, ask Davidallen. We went south to Salem and then west to Lincoln city. Go to the beach there, it will be cold but it's pretty and we really enjoyed watching and BSing with the guys crabbing. We kept along the Oregon Coast going south, then into CA into the redwoods on 101. We did go over to 1, but it wasn't the greatest road getting over there. Our strategy last year was we stayed at casinos along 101 every night. Rooms are always nice and rates are cheap. They all had restaurants that were good. I love it up there, definitely worth the trip. Have fun!

Thanks that's some good info and it looks like lots of redwoods in northern California
On the Casinos, are there any to stay away from? some of the reviews are so-so. I was looking at the Chinook Winds Casino in Lincoln City

I was there last weekend. Wife and I stayed 2 nights at the Sephanie Inn in Cannon Beach. That hotel is awesome, and the town is cool too. We drove out to Hood River and toured Full Sail Brewery. Double Mountain brewery, also in Hood River, has pretty good pizza and beer. There is a smaller, scenic road that parallels I 84 out to Hood River. If you take that road, you can stop at all of the waterfalls, like Multnomah Falls.

While in Portland, go to Powell's bookstore if you're into that sort of thing. It's huge. Deshutes brewery has a pub near it, and it is awesome. Piazza Italia is great for Italian food, and Salty's on the Columbia has excellent seafood and a great view.

Beautiful city and state. I go for a conference once a year. My wife and I say that we want to move there every time. If we didn't have two businesses and family here in Oklahoma, we probably would.

Every one that we stayed at was great, but I think they were all further south into California. They are fairly small casinos. Some we didn't even gamble at.

Also as posted above, Salty's on the river was nice with a cool view on the river and near the airport. And you have to go to Voodoo donuts as it a "totally Portland" as my cousin says.

Some of this is a repeat of Pop...'s post but included it anyway. Hood River/Falls drive, she added the Bonneville Dam and a fish hatchery that has tours. Again, Cannon Beach. In town, the Rose Garden (she was there for Rose Festival), Japanese Garden and the Zoo are all in same area (they didn't go to zoo, just the two gardens). Also recommended the Chinese Garden. City Grill on top of bank building has the best city view. Lastly, Voodoo Doughnuts and walk the waterfront.
