I think if I look at this season in this way, I find it a bit more palatable. I made up the Seed based on what would have been likely assigned back when both fields were full.

Left bracket
1 Seed - Clinton vs
4 Seed - Sanders

Play-in Game (if necessary...FBI investigations, Bern insurrection..)

Right bracket
5 Seed - Trump vs
8 Seed - Cruz

Play-in Game (if necessary...brokered convention)
