Clinical psychologist Jordan B. Peterson says the time has come for liberals and “left-leaning” individuals to “identity the markers of pathological extremism.”
The author of the best-selling book “12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos” told the popular YouTube channel “Big Think” this week that liberal activists and academics have not found a way to “box in” radicals as their counterparts on the right have done.

“What’s interesting is that on the conservative side of the spectrum we’ve figured out how to box in the radicals and say, ‘no, you’re outside the domain of acceptable opinion,’” the University of Toronto professor said. “Now, here’s the issue. We know that things can go too far on the right, and we know that things can go too far on the left. But we don’t know what the markers are for going too far on the left. I would say that it’s ethically incumbent on those who are liberal or left-leaning to identity the markers of pathological extremism on the left and to distinguish themselves from the people who hold those pathological viewpoints — and I don’t see that that’s being done.”
Maybe you can help me out with your markers for right extremism. Seems a bit simplistic to put extremism on a simple continuum but give me your markers.

My 2 cents - the definition of extremism is not bounded by ideology - for instance relying on a campaign of fear and intimidation, regardless of ideology, is extreme. Do you disagree?
The need to demonize anyone or anything outside ones belief system is another tell tale sign. I don't mean criticism, I mean the constant ad hominem attack - the need to dredge up some attribute of disdain for instance is extreme and generally indicates the shallowness of the position of the extremist.
Finally, the idea that there is but one outcome/resolution, often described as the final solution is an indication of an extremist position.
Now give me my pennies.

And this is an example of why I don't respect Peterson. The frame of the question is tribal. It presumes narrow social bands where political discussions are central. In my universe politics are 5th or 6th on the list.

Dr Peterson is the greatest public intellectual of our lifetime. one of the very few such people who is not overrated.
